"There's a possibility that it may." Naoto responded, before she used the butt of her gun to shatter another one of the many mirrors that covered Nuadoria at the moment. She wasn't about to use her bullets on something like shattering windows, because she didn't want to be out of them in the case that the thing in the mirror came out.

The broken glass could prove to be a danger in itself, but the entity that lurked in the mirror was the main focus at the moment.

"In the event that it does, we shall defend ourselves to the best of our ability."

Something dark flitted from behind the glass, as the pieces scattered around their feet.

This had started with a single mirror. An impulse, mostly; an unwillingness to sit still and not at least test what lay behind these things which seemed to cover the entire city. Once one had laid broken, the kouhai had just run with it, and soon enough--

The glass crunched beneath Akihiko's fist, webbing into jagged triangles around a circle impression. He drew back a glove and the shards fell, and that dark feeling pulsed again, much nearer.

Yamagishi would be valuable here, or Mitsuru at the least. Somewhere close by, Akihiko's familiar tossed its head, hooves tapping anxiously on broken pavement. It was wary of something; all their familiars were, and had been since the glass had first covered the city. But what it was lay completely at the edge of Akihiko's awareness, no nearer than the hallucinations that whispered at the cusp of perception, and he couldn't predictHe flexed his knuckles beneath the gloves ( ... )

"Only one way to find out."

But how useful would he be? Even the familiars...Naoto had a raven, Akihiko a stag. His panda familiar, while cute and likely good for picking up girls, wasn't exactly the sort of thing which he'd imagine would be good for a fight. (Two nights ago, Yosuke had a dream that his familiar removed its costume and turned out to be Teddie disguised as a panda. He didn't mention it to Naoto.) Then again, how good would a raven be? The stag, sure, it could run if nothing else an--...hell, he needed to stop thinking about it. If they didn't do anything, someone else could get hurt in their stead and it wasn't something that he was going to let happen.

How did Chie put it? Oh, right. "Don't think. Feel," he muttered, louder than he intended as he twirled his wrench once and took out another mirror. (Up until recently, Yosuke never did realize just how many mirrors this place had, all things considered.) "So if nothing else happens, we just head back to the center and try another direction, right?"

A shadow moved.

"If nothing else happens, we should stop and try another tactic," Akihiko countered. There was that saying about trying the same thing expecting different results, anyway. His knuckles could lose their patience too. "Think we've already earned enough bad luck to make the rest of our lives interesting."

However short those turned out to be. Fighting Shadows had always come at a risk of life-- he knew that well. But Nuadoria hadn't been part of the game plan, and even now, half-voices whispered caution in the back of his mind. Some, he thought he recognized, and that alone was enough to sow doubts--

"There!"

It moved. Not just a shadow, but a figure, sliding like a stream of cool light behind the glass. The thing was barely a shape-- more a presence, ice-cold and running like fingernails down a chalk-board through Akihiko's consciousness as it leaped from one mirror to the next, avoiding the field of broken ones the three had left in their wake.

"Shirogane! Try to cut it off!"
