Never in a million years had Sora imagined that something like this could ever happen, especially not to someone like Riku. For as long as he could remember, Riku had been one of the most important people in his life: the boy he’d grown up with, his rival and, at times, his enemy too. Above all though, Riku had been his best friend and nothing-not the countless worlds that had once separated them or the many forces that tried to come between them in the past-had ever been able to change that. They were simply too close, their destinies too tightly woven for Sora to even need to consider what life without Riku in it would be like. Even during their previous separations, losing Riku forever just hadn’t been an option in Sora’s mind. He had always known he would find his friend eventually, no matter how long it took or how many worlds he had to search. It rarely happened, but this time Zack had no words of comfort to speak even when the other started to blame himself. It wasn't right, he knew, that he let Sora's words hang in the air without a protest. Sora wasn't at fault, and he was sure both of them knew that there really was nothing that could have been done save the situation not happen at all. In fact, he was sure just about everyone had wished this situation hadn't happened in general. The fear, the worry, the pain-and you didn't even have to lose someone you cared about to feel it-none of them had needed it in a place like this. Every circumstance, every ounce of physical reality lent itself to convincingly say that Sora was not at fault
