Winter
Joshua Radin

I should know
Who I am by now
I walk
The record stands somehow
Thinking of winter

Your name is the splinter inside me
While I wait

The snow crunched underneath Jack’s feet as he walked across the Plas, towards the ‘tourist entrance’ of the Hub, secretly hoping to find Ianto sitting there, possibly eating pizza, maybe watching James Bond. Of course, he knew that Ianto wouldn’t be there, not for a very long time.

It hurt to even think about it. To think of his face, his hair, his arms, just him. It hurt to even imagine a life without him, even though he’d done it thousands of times before; losing people, having to forget about them. But this one hurt, badly. A lot more than the others. So very much more.

Why did Ianto have to leave? Why did he leave Jack with an aching, a splinter? Ianto wouldn’t be back for a very long time, and Jack didn’t quite know whether he could bear it.

The rest of the team were sad too, also, and they tip-toed around Jack whenever Ianto was mentioned, for fear that Jack would just, well, abandon them again. The heartache was clear to see.

Would Ianto come back to him, Jack achingly thought in his head, letting out a giant sob as he slid down the wall inside the tourist office. Finding everything so organised, so neat, just reminded Jack of what he’d lost, and would possibly never have again.

The snow continued to fall outside, harder and faster now, as Jack sobbed on the floor, wishing that the next time he died, it would be the very last.
