Dark day in the City

So, the stagehand stike is on, and most of Broadway is off. I hope this one doesn't last long, most shows can't afford a pause and come back swinging. Wicked might make it, but lots of others won't. Anyone have any idea how long this is likely to run?

8 shows are still running, anyone know why those? I'm sure they use stagehands too.

They have seperate contracts. Sucks that Pygmalion is still going and Cyrano isn't though, since Claire Danes < Jen Garner.

Sucks a lot for anyone going to NY in the next few weeks. There's a girl from my work gone for the weekend, but she doesn't like theatre anyway. She's very odd.

One of my two oldest friends hates theatre. It's weird, and I don't get it. But we share other interests.

And you know what's ironic? I wanted to go to NYC for my birthday in early Dec, but my mom convinced me to go in August with her. I have no idea how long the strike will last, but now I'lm glad I didn't wait!

Yeah, I had vague hopes of getting there while The Receptionist and the Ritz are still playing, and though neither of them are affected, I don't think I'll have the money anyway. Bet off-b'way does well for the next while. I hope it's doen soon.

The League and Local One have been in negotiations for more than three months, wrangling over work rules and staffing requirements, particularly requirements governing the expensive process of setting up a show.

Local One, which has been working without a contract since the end of July, was told Friday by its parent union, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, to begin the walkout on Saturday.

Eight Broadway shows will not be affected by the strike, as they are playing in theaters with separate Local One contracts. They are "Young Frankenstein," "Mary Poppins," "Xanadu," "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee," "Mauritius," "Pygmalion," "The Ritz" and "Cymbeline." Off-Broadway shows will also keep running.

But among the shows shut by the walkout are such popular attractions as "Wicked," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Rent," "Les Miserables," "Monty Python's Spamalot" and "Mamma Mia!"

I'm a little confused about life...lol. I heard from several people way back in like...early September that Wicked had separate contracts with their stagehands as well...In any case, I really hope it doesn't last long. :( So sad.

It's very sad when theatres are closed. I don't like it at all. But Wicked was on thes list of closed shows, so I guess their contract wasn't enough.
