Asters.  More specifically, these are Eurybia divaricata, or white wood asters.  They flower in mid to late summer and early fall and are, to some, a symbol of patience.  It takes approximately two years for an aster to flower fully, as this one has.

Yes. The starting price was two sets of human eyes, but this was the end price after a small amount of bartering.

It's both of those things.

From a strictly analytical point of view, however, it makes perfect sense. He gives me something that has little value to him in exchange for something that, to him, is more valuable. He can't eat lives, and eighteen animal eyes are, I assume, worth more than a single pair of human eyes.

It's remarkable what changes time here can have. I received a complaint about a possible werewolf the other day and it didn't strike me as at all unusual.
