The human struggle for existence invariably involves property.  We require food, clothing, shelter, companions... land.  Wars are fought over the question of ownership for man is not a self-sustaining creature and needs other things to thrive ( Read more... )

Oh~, nothing much. Can I come over?

If you want to, yes.

That is very well put, sir.

However, there are instances wherein it is acceptable to refer to another person as "mine" or "yours." The marriage vows use the possessive, for example. You would not deny a person the ability to say "my wife" or "my husband," would you? Or the right to claim one's children as one's own?

Property and proprietary claim are not precisely the same, after all.

I do concede your point about writing upon another's person. It is indeed rather foolish. Now affixing a label to their bodice

Referring to your spouse or children as yours indicates a bond, not full possession. The same with friends. Both parties possess a relationship, but not the other person... at least, not as property.

Semantics.

Thank you for being sensible.

A man of my position can hardly afford to be anything but sensible.

What position is that?

It's pretty fun for a curse, though.

Until someone decides to write all over you with a marker, yes.

It'll come off with a little scrubbing.

I hope so. I'd rather not walk around like this.

Has anyone labeled you?

I don't think well-reasoned arguments are going to stop anyone today.

Unfortunately.

When do they ever?

I'm going to have "Property of Road" scribbled on my head for weeks.

At least no one was fighting over you?

[Included with this comment: 1 picture of Dexter covered in marker and labels, all of which have some variation on "mine" "property of Deb" "my brother" etc.]

Not enough people want me.

Don't you feel loved?

Oh, I don't know, I think it's kind of fun. I mean, this can just be meant as a gesture of affection, don't you think? A hard to clean one, yes, but still. It doesn't mean they think that they're in charge of everything that person does, right?

It doesn't need to be bad. I was thinking of a specific friend when I typed this... she takes ownership very seriously.

Oh, really? Well, in that case, I guess that's something to be concerned about, then. Especially if she was doing it to you! But, well, at least it only lasts twenty-four hours?

I think maybe I'm a little more excited than I should be- this is my first curse, and it's not so bad. Definitely gives some upheaval to the City, though, which I suppose is intentional.

In her case, she wasn't actually cursed.

I'm glad your first curse has been mild. The City's always chaotic during curses, but some are almost fun. Others--there aren't many of them--can be difficult to get through.
