revenge of the fallen: using the muted group theory to analyze the movie transformers 2

Edwin Ardener, Cheris Kramerae and their colleagues developed the muted group theory as a communication and feminist approach, because it deals with the exclusion of women in the mainstream and public avenues of expression. Kramerae posits that, since men are the dominant group in society, then their views and perceptions are also dominant (in ( Read more... )

This is so unfair. Why are we treated like this? We women are not tools for 'men's peasure'. We are capable of much more, and yet, why aren't we recognized for them?
One day, we women will ba able to turn this world around, and one day, we will prove you men wrong.

True. Megan Fox was cast in the movie only to serve as eye candy (probably to entice men even more to watch the movie). I would have liked her character to be more important or more substantial. Instead, she took orders, was extremely superficial (the whole 'I Love You' thing), and was treated as an object.

The mother was also characterized as a dumb, overly sentimental ditz that held her family down. It was meant as humor, I suppose, but I think it could have offended some mothers. After all, they are the ones who nurture and care for the well-being of their child more; they don't act reckless or drunken.

It's a nice movie, I suppose, but when you do step back and think about it... it loses it's glitz.

where is equality? zep_hanie July 1 2009, 12:28:17 UTC
I like the movie specially the part when Optimus prime and his group are protecting the world against the fallen, but then i did notice that the character of the girlfriend and the mother are really not right. they were given only subordinate roles in the movie they are always under the controlled of men as if they cannot do something right.
just by watching the movie i can still see that until now in a new generation women are still not treated fairly we are still discriminated in so many ways and one sample of it is in the movie. I think we should stop it learn to stand up and be proud to say that we women can also do what man can do.(stephanie villota -302c)

men and women are equal! casseyreyes July 1 2009, 14:31:55 UTC
We might not have the built for it but I'm pretty sure that we can do better. Women are not Secondary! Women are not dependent to man. Let us not discriminate women by not letting them do things that people think that only man can do. We can stand by our own without the help of any men. Women can give more that what men thinks we can only give; "pleasure".

I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm sure i going to like it. :)

Funny. I wasn't aware of how the movie portrayed women through its' characters until I read this. The movie was good but having read this critique, my impression changed. The writer or maybe the director should be given lectures on Women's Studies. :)) All the women characters were given unfair treatments and focus. They were like placed there only for display though they really were a great help to the development of the plot. The women were also given scenes that were funny but more of insulting to us, women. The viewers, like me, would really not notice it immediately especially if we would only focus on the robot-human "war". That's all. :)
