A New Hope: Celebrating the Freedom of Star Wars

So, my Facebook feed sort of exploded today with the news of good old George selling Lucasfilm to Disney for an enormous chunk of change. 4.8 billion, so I heard. Personally… I’d love to see that contract ( Read more... )

You've talked me around, and I'm very happy you did. You're right on all counts. A bit of 'Disney-fying' at this point is the least of our worries. If we may end up with some positive forward movement which doesn't involve GL and his yes-man (I seriously want to be the person who GL pays to follow him around and repeatedly say, "Yes, that's a great idea, George.") as a result, it will indeed be a very good decision.

A new generation of Star Wars fans is very seductive indeed. The prequels (though not entirely as awful as Clooney Batman) certainly didn't manage to achieve that.

We must wait and see at this point, but I'm feeling optimistic, so thank you!

I don't think I want to see a reboot of 1-3. Largely because I feel burned by George and his seemingly never ending string of special editions and directors cuts and whatever else.

I do, however, look forward to 7-9.

I completely agree with this. I'm so thrilled that Lucas is stepping down from writing these movies. And that 7,8, and 9 include the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, Han, etc. is a definitely good thing. According to people who have read the story treatments, 7, 8, and 9 are the best of the 12-part series. I have a feeling that with the combined power of Lucasfilm (who really pioneered a lot of the special effects) and Disney, who have done amazing jobs with the Marvel movies, this next trilogy will be awesome.

I'm somewhat open to it, but I'm so, so attached to many of the characters and plots from EU that I think I'm enviably going to be disappointed because I've known what happened after Episode 6 for more than a decade and they're just going to re-write that. If there is no Mara Jade, no Jedi Academy, etc. I'm going to be severely disappointed. I love and adore so much of the books & comics in the Expanded Universe, I just can't with movies re-writing that. I'm still pissed Lucas ignored Boba Fett's backstory in the prequels (weirdly one of my major problems with the prequels is the ignoring of EU established stuff).

I'm sure the new movies will be good, they just won't be what I've spent more than a decade knowing as life in a galaxy far, far away post RotJ.
