That paragraph is a good one, definitely sets the mood. How long is your story by the way? I, sadly, have never actually completed anything more than a short story. Not so much as a novella... And though the first chapter is a bit slow, you sometimes have to get through those parts. Its not as if it can be all action and werewolf battles, so I say you've done a good job.
Aw, thanks :) My novel is approximately 176 pages long. Typed, single spaced at #12 font. I've been told that if it were bound and everything it would be 200 something pages.
With the third draft though, it looks like it's going to be longer. So we'll see.
I have the opposite problem! I have a hard time keeping my stories short. I've started on a couple of short stories but it's hard for me to condense a plotline and character development into a few pages. That's something I really do need to work on.
The problem with the first chapter being boring is that the first chapter is the hook to the story and if people lose interest then I'm screwing myself over. But again, I'm not sure if I can change it. *shrugs*
