Dogs in Albuquerque

I just started a livejournal community on "the joys of living with a dog in Albuquerque."

If you would like to join, it is called "abqdogs" and can be found at:

http://community.livejournal.com/abqdogs/

It is for discussing anything about dog ownership in Albuquerque

We have a 7 year old border collie/aussie shepherd. She is originally from Arizona. Wandered into my hubby's yard in the desert back in 1999. She's a beautiful animal, loving and protective. I've noted in my neighborhood there are a lot of dogs but I don't see a lot of people walking them. Many are behind bars...literally. No wonder they freak out when you go by. I walk Ginger most days, she gained some weight over the summer and we are using the cooler weather to exercise..both of us.

I know what you mean. Whenever I take my dogs out around midnight (before bed...hehe I stay up late) and I hear all the dogs barking, I feel sad that there are so many dogs outside alone instead of inside where it's warm with their human companions. The absolute worst, though, was when I lived in a large apartment complex in the middle of the city (before I had dogs) and there were all these dogs staring lonely and sad out windows with no yards to run in. Also, in my neighborhood someone lives in a second story apartment and has a big dog that sits on the balcony staring down at other people walking their dogs.

Still, whenever I drive down the street there is always someone walking a dog. There are some nice parks nearby to walk dogs to since it's an older area of town; the new areas don't have that which makes me sad.

I am trying to get more exercise, too, and walk the dogs more. Do you try to do things to make it more exercisey... like speed walk?
