Hrrm... possibly Tenney will find himself in a role similar to Two-Face? A man split between his genuinely good, humanitarian interests and those of the not-exactly-flawless organization he works for - sounds like an expansion of Harvey's dilemma to me. At least he only has to worry about his own dark side; Tenney, if my theory is correct, may find himself shouldering the burden for the entire Catholic Church - or the Gotham branch of it, anyway. Angel/demon has always been one interpretation of the Two-face mental split; perhaps we're going to see a more literal interpretation of that, only with perhaps some ambiguity as to which side is which...
Incidentally, man, just wondering - did you get that link to my latest article? Just wondering, 'cause it's been a while.

That's what I'm wondering as well, especially if Mishkin makes it a point to call out the Church itself rather than just a few corrupt bad eggs at the top like Monsignor Fisk there. I hope that's the case, since it would make for a far more interesting dilemma for Tenney.

I did get the link, and I de-grayed it and everything! I just haven't read it yet due to the same reasons that I also haven't responded to last post's comments nor many of the comments from the post before that: namely, that real life continues to suck out most of my free time and brain energy. I'm sorry it's been a while, and I wish I could say that I will be able to post, respond to, and read things more frequently, but I doubt that'll be happening anytime soon. Life is tough right now.

That sounds mightily depressing; sorry, man. Gray periods are always tough.
You want my advice? Find some excuse, and take a day off. Do something fun and recharge, or just laze around until you feel better. I know, I know; it's easy for me to say, but honestly, the only way I've ever gotten out of a rut is to go in a different direction for a while.
Anyway, however you manage it, I hope things get better soon.

Would that I could, but I'm a father now. There are no days off! And with the kid nearing the Terrible Twos (there's a Harvey joke to be made here, but I'm too tired to think of one), I don't think that there will be any days off anytime soon!

Hmm... interesting, since I don't think you've reviewed any story here where the Church/any religion in general plays such a large role. That said, do you have any particular opinion on the Church/religion in general that you'd like to go over?

As for the story itself... like you said, it's really too early to judge the writing here. I'm also pretty apathetic toward Mandrake, save for the fact that he drew the last third of Chuck Dixon's original General arc.

Not really.

His work on The Spectre was pretty sweet. At his best, he does what Gene Colan did so well, only I think I like Mandrake a bit better, blasphemy as that may be to admit.

I've personally always seen Harvey as a Protestant, but also someone who is quite knowledgable about other religions where the theme of duality plays a part.

I find it interesting that the church is named "St Dismas" - Dismas is known as the Penitent Thief, one of the two criminals was crucified next to Jesus. He's said to have repented his crimes as he died, and asked Jesus for mercy. To the best of my knowledge he's the only person in the New Testament promised an immediate place in Heaven. (depending on how you interpret where the comma should be in the phrase "I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise") . Is this pointing towards a redemptive arc for Harvey after all in this story?

Good catch on St Dismas! I'm not sure that I would have caught that even if I had known who the Penitent Thief was! I wonder if it's foreshadowing Harvey's arc, and/or Tenney's?

I loved Mishin's Blue Devil (especially the Summer Fun annual....always loved how the Demon appeared there as well as Swamp Thing....as if the Blue Devil "universe" could make the character more fun and the Swamp verse more serious and dark...made sense to me!)

Anyway...wow...I'm stunned by how much unnoticed attention Harvey Dent is getting. This is artistically (thank you Mandrake!) and dialog wise some amazing work on the character already (will someone please tell Scott Snyder to read this???!!!)

Kind of reminds me of the Ostrander Spectre (I give the DeMatisse Spectre/Two-Face issue points for bringing up interesting questions and thoughts)

Thanks for tuning me into this...I would have missed it otherwise

I have the saddest news to report: Carmine Infantino has passed away. The man who co-created the Silver Age Flash (which debatably saved comics), the Phantom Stranger, Black Canary, King Faraday, Captain Comet, drew the definitive Adam Strange, and for those of you here, much of the '89-91 Batman newspaper strip.

For me, Infantino was the defining artist of the early Silver Age. When I think of Jet Age America and comics, I think of Infantino's art deco furniture and buildings, sleek machinery, diners, trenchcoats with criss-cross marking, tail-finned cars, etc. He may have made a lot of enemies when he was a publisher, but I'll always remember him as one of the true greats of comic book art. RIP.
