Visions of Villainy: Chris Samnee

Dec 08, 2012 19:19

Since real life has once again become far too real to allow free time for the usual in-depth bloggery, I think it'd be neat to post a gallery of Batman villains as drawn by a single artist of note, someone who has an amazing style of their own who also brings something unique to the Rogues. Today, I'd like to dedicate this post to Chris Samnee.

To be a bit more substantial: I wish I could more nods to Selina's old outfit than we usually do (hopefully in a context that makes sense), Ozzie looks very good, human-Crockers is awesome, I end up yet again wondering how Harley's costume work (what is that thing, anyway?), first Ledger!Joker fanart that I can really love, Zsasz is haunting ( ... )

I'm guessing that Harley's outfit is really a high-waisted two-piece dealy, where what looks like a jumpsuit is actually a top and a bottom that intersects at the point where the colors change. Like, she's wearing tights that come up over her abdomen, and then a sort of jacket that they partially cover. (Or, if it is a one-piece, there's probably a skillfully-concealed zipper with the pull-key hidden under her neck-ruff.)
Personally, I like to think that both the Joker and Batman have valid points, it's just that the former is crazy, so he's more or less incapable of arguing things out rationally, and it's grown more and more twisted over the years until at this point it only really makes sense to him. If you could make him sane for a while, he might be able to make a solid (albeit somewhat nihilistic) case for his view on things, but that ain't going to happen anytime soon.

On Harley, I suppose that makes sense. It's just that it looks like the entire thing is spray-painted on her, and it puzzles me.

On TKJ, it's more that I get the impression that people swarm over mr. J without actually pointing out why he's right or wrong in his way of perceiving things. I find that unsettling, troubling and maddening. (I don't know that for sure outside my social sircles, but the internet has not deleted that impression.)

Well, yeah, but you could say that about a lot of characters in comics. I'm actually basing my 'top and bottom' theory on Captain Britain, who has another skintight costume that makes you wonder just how the hell he puts it on. They show you. It's gratifying.
So far as the Joker goes, I've talked to a lot of people who think he's cool - and they're right; he's a classic villain - but not too many who think he's inherently right. I mean, he's a larcenous hoodlum at best, a mass-murdering psychopath at worst. Perhaps your social circle is just more cynical than mine...

I've seen pages of "Cargo of Doom" and it involves the gleeful slaughter of bewildered Dinosaurs. So, erm...no thanks.

Wow, I really like his style - my favourites would have to be the ones of Poison Ivy and Ozzeh. I'm not actually that keen on the first Harvey portrait - he looks like he should be working on the building site down by the local quay D: I am a big believer in Two-Face as a sharp dresser. I like the scarring detail on the pen and ink portrait though.

Why do I get serious Pinky and the Brain vibes from Doom and Harley?
