DCAU Review: Harvey and Pals, Part 3: "Trial." Plus, a bonus "Story That Never Was!"

Sep 01, 2012 10:54

Welcome to the final part of our triple-feature review of Harvey taking a supporting role in the show to pal around with his "fellow miscreants" in episodes of Batman: The Animated Series.

In the show's second and third seasons, when it was retitled The Adventures of Batman & Robin, there were a lot of episodes which felt like sequels, follow-ups ( Read more... )

I remember being, like, 8 or 9 and thinking it was stupid that harvey was not acting as bruce's defense attorney.

Ha! Man, how typical is it that a kid can sometimes see that sort of plainly obvious thing better than the likes the Paul Goddamn Dini?

Well, I don't want to sound cruel, but whenever Paul Dini was given a chance to write a more "screwball" episode, he tended to insert a fair amount of fanservice and kink. At the time, he was probably thinking about how he could add in some more lady-boobies.

That panel where Two-Face is flipping his coin after Ivy made that remark about her almost killing him is weather he wants to strangle her or hit her with a truck.

Hey man, just a quick note here to inform you that the first one of my Batman movie articles that I was telling you about has just been published. I'm gonna try posting an incomplete link, in the hopes that LiveJournal won't gray me out:

I unashamedly ship Harvey/Ivy. I just wanted to put that out there.

Good to know, good to know. While nothing can take the place of my OTP of Harvey/Gilda, I would be more than open to seeing Harvey/Ivy explored more.

Personally, I believe that the fight scene does hold a few interesting implications for Harvey. Namely, that he's the voice of reason, commanding that "Nobody panic" even when Batman springs his bonds, and coolly sweeping the darkness with a lighter (where'd he get that, anyway? Is he a smoker off-screen ( ... )

Heh, you seem to have mistaken Van Dorn for the Wasp, there. :) And yeah, she really is one great big Strawman here. I do wish we'd seen her get some return appearances and character development (and maybe some further development on the "drug" aspect, since Van Dorn has no reason to think otherwise even after the events of Trial), but alas, it was never to be.

That "voice of reason" observation is a good one, enough so that I now wish that I had remarked on the "nobody panic" moment. As for Harvey being a smoker, well, considering that famous Bruce Timm piece, I think we can all accept the possibility that TAS Two-Face enjoys the occasional drag. At least, between commercial breaks when the kiddies aren't watching.

Whoops! My bad.

In other news.... according to the DCAU Wiki, they actually wrote a few lines for Scarecrow in this episode's script, but Henry Polic underwent throat surgery shortly before recording began.

And now for a total fanboy nitpick: it was Ivy who slapped Arnold, not Harley.
