Okay, headline aside, I'm not going to try talking like a pirate for National Talk Like a Pirate Day. Sorry, Henchgirl, I just can't do it. But hey, I'll do the next best thing: finally post about Kenner's Pirate Batman VS. Pirate Two-Face action figure pack!

You're very welcome! :D

And here I was putting this off posting this since around last Christmas because I didn't think anybody would care.

I do not think a world where no one cares about Pirate Two-Face is a world I'd care to live in. :D

Well, let's be fair here, if you saw someone with THAT sort of hardware coming towards you with battle in his eyes, you'd run like mad, wouldn't you? It's all about that psychological edge - can't be a proper legendary pirate without it ( ... )

I can see that, actually. "His weaponry is ridiculously impractical and over-the-top, and yet he's just crazy enough to use it! Abandon ship!"

The way I look at it (or rather, the way it's just occurred to me to look at it), that isn't so much his 'real' weaponry as an action-figure-related exaggeration. A lot of action figures do that - they take something that the character actually uses, and make it jumbo-sized and exaggerated so it's easier to play with. (For instance, I'm pretty sure there's at least a few Batman figures that give him batarangs which would be about three feet long in real life.) Hence, as I see it, the 'real' Pirate Two-Face has a more normal-sized Captain Hook-style prosthesis, with a sword attachment that allows him to fight with it. Which is still pretty cool.

Hooray! An excuse to engage in another Chuck Dixon love-fest!

The Pirate annual certainly wasn't the deepest or best-done Elseworlds I read, but it certainly wasn't horrible. Dixon even managed to get some of his trademark Joker humor into the Laughing Man.

And as for making the pirate-verse a full-fledged world in its own right... I think that making exploration a major theme would be a boost. My favorite anime/manga of all time, One Piece, is also about pirates, and its greatest charm is that their world is nowhere close to be fully mapped out. Every island the protagonists sail to holds some new, bizarre wildlife and an even weirder (and deadlier) environment.

Batman, as we know him, is largely tied to Gotham. But Leatherwing has no such restraints - in-between fighting off Spanish galleons, he could spend his time exploring and charting Central America, the horn of Africa, the Middle East, the Orient, perhaps even Australia...

I've never read the whole issue, actually. The art was so damnned ugly. Well, not ugly, exactly, but I felt like I had scurvy just reading it. I should give it a proper read once I can dig that comic out of storage. Man, I hate having my entire collection in storage.

I should also probably read One Piece one of these days.

pirate harvey has to deal with scurvy and sodomy. it is much worse to be pirate harvey.

Well, we don't know exactly how bad conditions are at Arkham, so who knows?

Lydia adds, "But he's the Captain! No one sodomizes the captain unless he wants to be! Unless there's a mutiny, in which case, ouch."

As a fan of elseworld series this one seems "blah", cause the story for Two-Face didn't seem to be fleshed out at all. Just a cheap gimmick to sell the toy itself....
