The Internal Combustion Gnomes

Yep. Even with overwhelming proof, some people still believe the world is 6000 years old, and that god made them, as completely separate things as everything else ( Read more... )

well, it should be noted that nobody, NOBODY in the scientific community believes there's even a competing theory for natural selection. creationist "science" has never, ever been published in a scientific journal, and it's never, ever submitted for peer review. therefore, it isn't accepted or recognized by the scientific community. anyone who doesn't know(as opposed to belief)that natural selection is the best guess we've got so far, isn't a scientist, and they aren't educated in anything approaching science.

so what's your stance on the virus? as far as i know, there are two seperate schools of thought: that they are alive, and that they are not alive. where do you stand?

I think the word "alive" is arbitrary. We are complex machines based on the complex folded proteins formed based on the carbon atom; viruses fit this description almost perfectly. They are different the way that humans are different than plants, but to say that their machinery is "too clever and small to be life" is ridiculous. No point.

but they don't eat, they don't excrete, they don't age, they don't even have the ability to replicate(to do that, they have to hijack our cells like a bunch of aye-rabs). what do you say to that?

I say that their machinery is different; if you define living as something that excretes or ages, then they don't qualify. The fact that they require something else to sustain their replication... I would cite various types of parasites, but I doubt it is necessary. They are definitely something more simple, and seemingly useless without being alongside earth life. They eat us.

For someone giving advice and judging the entire system of science, you made a pretty wild assumption there. You claim hatred in me where there is none. I do not hate Christians at all; I actually don't hate anybody. Most of my friends are religious people. I love my Christian friends, and I love arguing with my Christian friends about religion; I would assume they love arguing with me as well.

Also, about science- I think you kindof gave it the raw deal. Again, that's just my opinion, and I refer you to a David Deutsch video at TEDTALKS, if you're interested. It talks about open-ended discovery.

I'm entirely biased towards science, seeing it has given us medicine and airplanes and the such.

Sorry about the hate thing. I never meant to call you a hater. I enjoy your passion and your words do have quite the bite. Pick on one word to focus on all that I said okay. I meant to be encouraging challenging or supportive but your argumentative side wins. I guess I come off condescending.

Bye forever.

The only reason I responded to that one point was because I took issue with it; the rest of your statement pretty much spoke for itself. I responded to a couple of points, actually, but whatever.

Bye. Hope that wherever you go, you enjoy it.
