J got the news friday that his job (and that of his colleague who was in the same kind of position), is definitely turning tenure-track starting fall 2009. this means that a job search will start immediately, which is kind of a joke, since he's the *inside candidate* who is almost certainly guaranteed the job, the one that he always feared existed ( Read more... )

J is totally fine with it. he really likes the job, the tenure process is ridiculously easy, and he is happy enough with VA. me, well, i sort of talked about it in this entry. so i'm really not all that thrilled about it. i can probably live with the lack of options for me - though it will be hard - but the girls growing up in this environment is not something that pleases me. at all.

Crossing my fingers for the Perfect Job in the Perfect Place... and at least for being out of there before the girls reach puberty.

well, unless something opens up at Reno, which is most unlikely, we'll just have to settle for An Okay Place. there are currently about 10 jobs that J is well suited for - already as many as were posted the entire last job cycle - and none are all that exciting. U of Denver is the only one that i find appealing - i could do a phd there.

I still have an idyllic view of Virginia, so I have to take your word for it that it's not so great. I'm sure glad J. doesn't have to be stressed about his job situation.

it's not horrible or anything, don't get me wrong. it's just pretty *blah* to me. and i'm really uncomfortable about the rural aspect of it all, the lack of diversity, the lack of *culture*. and i'm so far not that pleased with the schooling options.

J got his department evaluation results today and got a stellar report from the chair; he had the highest teaching evaluations of anyone in the entire department. despite my hesitance at living here - we've got what looks like a possible infestation of crickets now - can you believe it??? - i am really happy for him and proud of him. he really does love the job here.
