The One Who Changed Me

Ever since I was little, I was always picked on by people who think they were bigger than me. They called me different nicknames like "Nerd", "Shorty" and so on. My days in elementary school were filled with depression and sadness. No one was there to help me, including my parents. Who were busy with their own lives.

My parents wouldn't care if I dropped out of school or if I got caught by the police for stealing. They would only concentrate on their business, imports from other countries coming into Japan. Everyday, they would send a nanny over to take care of me.

When I was in high school, I never tried to interact with my classmates. I always sat at my desk, just ignoring my surroundings. Until that person transferred into my school.

"Hajimashite, Sakurai Sho desu."

When he stood there, in front of my class. All the girls started screaming. As usual I would just ignored them and continue reading my book. The teacher had assigned him to sit in the desk beside mine. He sat down and whispered. "Hajimemashite Kyoko-chan, hope we can become friends." I glanced at him and then continued reading.

At lunchtime, I took out my lunch. Onigiri. I sighed and took a bite of my pickled plum rice ball. Then I started hear the other girls talking about me, I shrugged those comments off and took out a piece of paper. I started to draw doodles. Like spirals and flowers.

Right beside me was Sho, who was surrounded by girls. They were screaming and saying things like "Here you can have my lunch." or "Are you free after school?". He just smiled to them while they were talking to him.

When school ended, I grabbed my stuff and headed out the door. As I was passing the gate, I heard someone calling me. "Kyoko-chan! Kyoko-chan!" I glanced behind me and I noticed that it was Sho. Without stopping, I continued walking home. Then I felt a tap on my shoulder, I turned my head behind me and he said "I caught you."

He smiled and then I stared at him. I asked. "What do you want? I have homework to do." Then he continued smiling and said. "Let's work on our homework together!" He followed me to my house and I let him in.

While I was walking to my kitchen, he was at the entrance. I said. "My parents are not going to be home until late." Then he took off his shoes and walked into my living room.

He murmured. "Sugoi!! Are you rich? Your house is so huge."

I ignored him and shouted. "What do you want to drink?"

"Water." He shouted back to me.

I sighed and took out cookies and placed them on a plate. Then I grabbed 2 glasses and poured water in them. I placed them on a tray and walked into my living room. He was too mesmerized by my house that he didn’t notice that I placed the cookies and water on the table.

He shouted. “Sugoi! I can’t believe that you live in a house like this. I should come over often.”

I ignored his comment and took out my homework that the teacher had assigned. Then he noticed that my homework was out so he took out his.

10 minutes later I was finished with my homework. I glanced over at his homework and he was half way done with the questions.
I muttered to him. “Aren’t your parents worried that you’re not at home yet?”

“Um.. 7x 2y = 24. So x is 10. No, its 2.” He totally ignored me. I grunted then I went upstairs to my room. I got into a t-shirt and jeans and was headed out the door when I heard. “I’m done!!!”

I shouted out “I’m going out. I’ll be back in 10 minutes.”

“Matte! Can I come? I have to go home soon anyways.” I sighed and then muttered “Whatever.”

While I was trying to get away from him, he started to ask me questions. I replied back and totally made a straight face when I answered him. He kept smiling even though I wasn’t smiling back. Then he started to get on my nerves when he started to poke my face and my back. I walked to the convenience store that I wanted to go and bought some food for my dinner.

I sat on a hill by the river that was near the convenience store. I heard Sho screaming and then I glanced to see him tripping on a rock and rolling down the hill. Then there was  huge splash in the river. He got up and he was wet and covered in dirt.

I started to laugh my head off. He had a weird expression on his face. I couldn't stop myself from laughing. He started to laugh with me and walked over to me.

“This is my first time seeing Kyoko-chan having an expression.”

I blushed and shouted. “Mou!” He laughed and then said “Well I have to go home and take a long bath. Ja ne.” He ran and waved to me, I waved back and I started to walk home.

For a couple of weeks, I started to be nicer to everyone around me. Sho was nice to tell everyone that I’m friendly to talk to. Before you knew it, he became my best friend.

On one morning, my parents had called me into our living room. They had sad faces and I was confused. They hardly called me into our living room. Except for the time, my grandpa died but that was it.

“Um.. We have some news to tell you, Kyoko-chan.” My father said. “Your mother and I got a new job. Our company got sold to a bigger company, so we have to move to Osaka in 2 weeks.”

I shouted. “Honto? But I got friends now. This is so sudden. No! I don’t want to move!”  I ran to my room and started to cry on my bed.

I stayed at home for a week. My classmates mostly Sho, came to my house but I never showed my face to them. I didn’t do anything. I just stayed in bed, no eating and I only went out for washroom breaks. That’s it.

Then my parents had enough, they forced me to go to school. My classmates were surprise especially Sho. During class, Sho tried to talk to me but I ignored him. I acted coldly to everyone until my last day of school.

The teacher had called me up to announce my transfer to another school. I walked up and I heard everyone whispering. I stood in front of the class and there was one person who was staring at me. It was Sho.

I shouted. “Um.. I’ll be moving away tomorrow morning. It was fun being in this class, I made new friends and had some good times with everyone. Arigato, for looking after me.” I bowed my head and the class was quiet. I started to cry. I wiped them away and then walked to my seat.

Sho placed his handkerchief on my desk and I took it to wipe my tears away. After my announcement, they understood why I was acting so cold. They talked to me during lunch and after school they invited me to go karaoke. I refused because I had to finish packing up my things.

The next morning, everyone came to my house. Sho came early to help me move the boxes into the truck. After moving and everything, I forgot that I still had his handkerchief. It was too late. I was already on the highway, going to my new house.

I took out my cell phone to tell him that I had his handkerchief, he said to keep it so I’ll remember him.

~*~*~*~*~

10 years later, I’m working for a big business company. I forgot everything that had happened. High school, elementary school and my childhood. They were lost in the back of my brain.
Until I saw him again. That face, that smile. I remembered when he called out my name.

Yes, my first love. The one who changed me was Sakurai Sho.
