Chapter 8

At the age of 14 years old, Kanon’s parents got a divorce. Her father is a successful CEO of a company and her mother is a famous lawyer known in Chicago.

Initially her mother won the custody battle between her and her husband, but since her mother was overseas a lot, Kanon mostly stayed with her father. Kanon was always alone in a big condo on top of company building. She had everything she wanted, toys, clothes, electronics, but the thing she wanted but never could receive was love.

When Kanon traveled to her mother’s house in Otemachi, which is in the outskirts of downtown Tokyo. Her mother and her father would often see each other as they exchange Kanon, like a briefcase holding millions of yen. They would each say sarcastic remarks to each other, glare at each other for 2 minutes and then grunt as they walk away from one another.

Kanon always felt constricted and she was always treated like a doll. “Oh, I’m better than your mother because I can let you live in this fabulous home.” “I’m way better than your father because I can buy and pick all these cute clothes for you.” When she always met her parents, all they talked about was how they could beat one another by making Kanon choose which parent was better.

Kanon couldn't decide because she loved them both equally. Why should she pick one than the other, right? Parents are supposed to love their child wholeheartedly. But it was different for Kanon, when she told both of them that she couldn’t decide and she loves them both equally no matter what kind of bribe they would use, and her answer will always stay the same, her parents began to distant themselves from Kanon.

Slowly her parents began to shun her from their priority and started to focus on their work. They couldn’t deal with Kanon anymore. At the end, her parents concluded that Kanon was at fault for their divorce and their bitterness over each other.

Yes, Kanon lost her eyesight because of her parents.

It was a cold and rainy spring afternoon. Her parents wanted to take Kanon to the beach but since it was suddenly raining, they decided to go back home. While her father was driving on a slippery and curvy road, an incoming truck slid in their lane and the car drove off the road.

Her father received a fractured rib, her mother a small concussion and a fractured leg and Kanon lost her ability to see and a fractured arm.

At first her parents blamed themselves but with stress and guilt on top of their lives, they soon forgot the truth that had happened.

Once Kanon settled down in a small apartment, courtesy of her parents, they made a deal that Kanon will not contact or see her parents until they contact her first.

Kanon has led an unfortunate life but will that change after meeting Arashi? Maybe. Probably. Hopefully.

“Your father sent those guys?” Jun was shocked and started to turn angry. He was thinking why Kanon’s father would give her this kind of treatment.

“I assume so. Since I was on high alert because of you, all my senses sharpened. Their smell that came off of them smelt like lavender and my father loves the smell of lavender. Also their footsteps were calm and not hesitant.” Kanon sighed and folded her arms.

“I know I shouldn’t bug into your private matters but why is your father giving you such treatment. I mean, you’re his daughter. He should come and meet you personally instead of asking his servants to come and get you.” Creases started to appear on Jun’s forehead and his breathing started to get faster. Kanon slowly shook her head and smiled. “I’m thankful that you’re worried about me. But apparently my father has a reputation to hold. He doesn’t want the image of himself to be ruined. He told me that I should tell people that we’re not related. On the other hand, my father does brag to people that he has a daughter but always forgets to mention that I’m blind.” Kanon exhaled and continued to shake her head.

Jun shut his mouth and kicked a small rock that was on the ground. He didn’t know what to say. He wanted ask why her father treated her this way but, it was none of his business.

“I think it will be okay for me to go home now. They’ll probably find me again and…” Kanon continued before Jun said anything else. “Also I’ll tell my father to treat me better, if you were wondering.”

Kanon smiled at Jun and with a grin she said. “I’ll promise to tell him okay? Don’t be worried about me; you must be busy with your job. I’ll be fine by myself.” Kanon lightly placed her hand on Jun’s shoulder and then brushed it off as she walked away from Jun.

Jun stood still and lowered his chin. He was worried about Kanon. He wanted to protect her because not only she’s blind but also he was developing feelings for her. Her laugh, her kindness and her smile. He wanted to shelter her from anything that would stop her from doing those things.

Jun walked out of the small and dark alley with his hands in his pockets. He looked up and stared at Kanon who was walking further and further away from him. He bit his lip and turned around to walk in the other direction.

Kanon slowly came to a stop and turned around to hear Jun’s footsteps getting dimmer each second. She sighed and wished that she was able to see him walk away. She knew that Jun was watching over her like her guardian angel, but she knew that if he kept being with her that he was going to regret it. Not because of her family matters but she had thrown away the emotion of love and her feelings.

“Kanon-chan, there is someone here to see you.” Natsuki said as she approached Kanon. Kanon furrowed her eyebrows and cocked her head. After what had happened that night, she thought that Jun was going to keep a distance from her.

“If it’s that guy from before…” Kanon said. Natsuki interrupted her and slowly shook her head. “No, it’s not him. It’s someone different.” Natsuki chuckled at the end of her sentence and started to walk away.

Kanon got up from her chair and tapped her walking stick towards the front lobby. As Kanon walked, she started to smell a familiar scent. It smelt like someone came from an old Japanese house. Kanon bit her lip and shouted. “Sakurai-san, what brings you here?”

Sho turned around with a shock look on his face and then smiled at her. “I was in the neighborhood and wanted to check up on you.”

She grinned and crossed her arms. “You’re not the only one…” She muttered under her breath before she made a tired smile at him.
