[ River has an ice planet, a ball of vanilla ice cream on a string and stick. It's her reward for being nice, from the city of Abax, although she doesn't know it right now. She might have had one before, when the Good Shepherd had bought her one, but eating it now isn't any easier. Seated cross-legged on the floor, she tries dangling it above her ( Read more... )

[ He just stares at this girl. ]

You ever think of putting it in a bowl?

Not the point. Bowl conducts heat. Fingers and spoons, too.

[ this is more practical. even if it isn't, at all. ]

So does your face. Which it's all over.

[ Just sayin'. ]

Momentary conduction, not continuous.

[ river frowns again at his comment, more deeply, and wipes her mouth off on her sleeve ]

Ice planets are structurally sound.

Usually, that works better with a spoon, love.

Don't got one. Appeared out of nowhere, broke the laws of physics, just like everyone else. Santa Claus is a myth told to small children to force compliance with societally acceptable morals. Doesn't exist.

[ pause ]

I didn't get you anything for Christmas.

Appeared out of no where. [He looks concerned.] Things that appear out of no where in this city rarely bring good tidings; do you feel all right, River?

[He pauses, blinks and then gives a small smile and shakes his head.]

As I did not get you anything either, let us not worry too much about it, hmm? Christmas is not a holiday I particular celebrate.

It's poisoned ice cream.

[ it really isn't, she's just trolling him, and the way that river struggles to keep a straight face might give her away ]

Man called Jesus was probably born in the spring. Star patterns don't align. Makes the whole holiday redundant, doesn't it?

Maybe if you hold it very still.

Plus, using your hands is always an option. [That is kind of hilarious to watch, and it's nice to take a break from his general WHY AM I TRAPPED IN A STRANGE CITY THAT MAKES NO SENSE every now and then.]

Not the point.

[ why does nobody understand this? river pauses and stares up at the ball dangling above her head ]

Taken into consideration.

Do you have a point? Because mastering the dangling, melting food probably shouldn't be high on the list.

I have a point. Do you?

There's no such thing as being perfect but practice does help control your muscles better.

Statement wasn't literal. Human muscles are never exact. They remember, but not completely. Margin of error is always present.

urnotafraid December 29 2011, 07:50:37 UTC
I did say better, not that it would be perfect. Nothing can be perfect if you really think about it.

Yes. Not even forced hands make perfect things, always something. Cracks. Underneath the surface.

[ after all, she was supposed to be the perfect weapon. but that didn't exactly turn out right. ]

Practice always makes perfect.

Not always. Too many variables to manipulate, some aren't meant to be.

x23laura December 29 2011, 16:17:26 UTC
You should minimalise the variables. Slow your action and concentrate on your hand and eye co-ordination.

nonfunction December 29 2011, 16:29:05 UTC
Minimize, but not erase.

[ her hand eye coordination is usally very good. which is why this is doubly frustrating. river tries again, but doesn't manage to get more than a mouthful. ]

Centrifugal force is a problem.
