[It is of great concern to him that the tree has the power that it does, and he will not sit by idly and hope that the memories taken from those close to him will simply be returned.

He stands as a shadow between some of the other trees with a clear view of the white one in the middle. It is not glowing as bright today, and his eyes pick out a ( Read more... )

[He may not be known to you, but the determination on his face is clear.]

I hope you can protect your mind, pal. Just being near it can take memories.

Harry Dresden, I know Gandalf. I've been investigating and I think it's those orbs. I was just on my way to see how the ice stands up to fire.

Your warning is appreciated, but I worry not for myself.

You are well met met, Harry Dresden. I am Aragorn. [slight bow of his head. He looks back down at the orbs, and nods.]

I will await your arrival.

It got someone close to you?

[A pause in his walk. He recognises that name. Mustn't fanboy, mustn't fanboy. This is not the time to geek out Dresden!] Nice to meet you, Aragorn.

Right, I'm not far. [In fact should Aragorn look, he'd see a tall figure emerging from the far off tree line, a staff in hand a long heavy coat about his shoulders.]

Aye, a very good friend of mine.

[He does glance over his shoulder and turns to walk closer. He inclines his head in a gesture of hello.

And of course he notices the staff!]

You are a wizard?

Be careful, Aragorn. Remain strong; I have faith in you.

[ She's concerned for him, yes, but knows this must be done. In secret, she'll harness whatever power she can from Nenya to protect Aragorn from the tree's influence. The ring had kept the mind of Galadriel hidden from Sauron for years unaccounted; hopefully it might lend at least some of the same influence here to aid Aragorn. ]

It is in your words, my Lady, that give me such strength. I shall not return until I have found what belongs to Haldir.

[He has only but his physical and mental strength, but even in hearing her voice, Aragorn feels a great wave of confidence that this challenge will end well.]

This I know. You have faced many an obstacle before and emerged the victor. I have every confidence in you and those who work by your side.

You're one of Mister Haldir's friends, aren't you? I-- I don't suppose there is anything that I can do to help? He was very kind to me.

I am. [Bows his head slightly] I am Aragorn.

Tell me, small one, has any of your memories been misplaced?

[Because if they have not, he'd be more leery in letting you help. He would feel a great sense of regret if you lost your memories trying to help his people.]

My name is Alice. [ she curtseys politely. ] It's nice to meet you, Sir.

.. Mine haven't, no. At least.. not that I know of. But I'm only eleven, so I don't have as many memories to lose as Mister Haldir. And-- And I'm used to strange places that do quite strange things.

You are well met, lady Alice.

But, those memories are still precious. Ones that you should keep to remember as you grow. [There is a pause as Aragorn considers her request to aid them before he finally speaks again] There are others who have said they have acquired memories that are not of their own. Is there a place you know that has tools that can break through ice?

[You can't see this, but Christine is rubbing her temples.]

Please don't go out there to that tree.

I heed your warning, my lady, but I simply cannot stand by while a friend of mine has had his memories stolen by that tree; memories that cannot be forgotten.

I'm sorry to hear that, I really am, but I don't agree that you going out there is the best thing. I know that maybe the key to regaining memories is the thing that took them away in the first place, but rushing out there to investigate isn't the answer. We need a more solid plan than just getting close to the tree and looking at it.

And in this situation, what do you suggest? I have spent a great deal of time watching it from a distance. Would you not do the same if someone you called friend were in the same conflict?

[Legolas joins him, watching the tree warily.]

The ice is thick, it will not easily give way.

But it will. Either by tool or fire, we can get to the orbs beneath.

[Aragorn looks to his friend.]

Has it stolen memories from you, Legolas?

I am not certain how well these tools will serve us, but I have brought all that I could find.

[Faramir, hastening over to join them, carried a number of shovels collected from one of the abandoned shops in the city.]

How fares Haldir?

If it has, I do not remember. [It's a joke okay? He flashes Aragorn a quick smile, then nods at Faramir.]

He is calmer than he was. [and that's all you're getting, because they are going to fix him and so it won't matter.]
