I tend to agree with you about SCA, and I'm certainly not going to enter these costumes into any contests. I mean, I have grand admiration for what those people do, but, wow...this is just a leisure activity for me!
Hand sewing buttonholes is another thing that's admirable...from a distance. :)
Considering I was looking forward to weaselling my way into including grommets and lacing in this project, I'm happy to omit the zip from this dress. I like the neckline on the other gown better, anyway. I usually make hybrid projects out of 2 or more patterns because they can never get it right in just one!
The finished product seems like it will be very similar to the cut of the dress I made for Phebe's "Susan Pevensie green archery dress" minus the vents in the upper sleeve. Hers had grommets in the back, too. I can't remember now if the pattern did or not, but since I was uses pieces of 3 different costume patterns I'm not sure which of the 3 I used for the torso/body of the gown. That seems to be the only way I can use patterns is to piece them together, I can never find a single one that has everything I want.
Haha. Phebe gets to the point where she just wants to wear it but I won't declare it finished because it's NOT RIGHT YET, lol. "Mooooom. It's just a costume." Me: "but it doesn't look exactly like that screen shot yet!"
I think your idea is brilliant and I can't wait to start seeing little updates on different parts of the dress in progress.

I am not weaving my own fabric or making buttons from scratch, or hand sewing button holes. EEEEEEEE
It's prefectly fine to have a zipper in an HP costume. Also if wearing something that hides the zipper, that works too.
Unless....you are entering costume contests for fair or SCA. Then yeah, no zipper. You could use buttons or lacing.
