Actually, at least with the desktop's replacement, I simply wanted to yank out the old drive and slave it in the new machine. I mean, salvage what I can, ne?

Roger - I'd be happy to work with you on this. Typically, your best bet in terms of getting the most for your money is to decide roughly what kind of computer you want - laptop? desktop? gaming rig? something basic? - and then be patient until you happen across a great deal using sites like dealnews.com, woot.com, or through employee discounts. You've got my e-mail; use it if you'd like.

http://www.woot.com has a pretty decent machine for $299 today. only $5 shipping, but if it doesn't sell out by midnight it will be gone and they'll be selling something else tomorrow.

Over the years I've bought PC's from just about everyone and even built my own. Nothing, including the custom built Alienware machines, have compared to the Apple I have now. Apple is worth the investment, but purchase the protection plan just in case something does happen, because their support is terrible without it.

I'd go with the new PC. Check out Newegg.com. They've always been absolutely amazing, customer service wise.

The myriad random errors you mention on the desktop are probably less about any dust or pet hair and more to do with some fan or other not working. Never underestimate the power of a good fan! The side of it being off isn't a big deal, really. I used to keep a side of my old one off and put an oscillating fan to blow into it. Totally ridiculous setup, but it helped when I had a power supply fan out and couldn't afford a power supply for a few weeks. If you are concerned with dust and hair, get a can of air and blow it out.
