"The worst choice I've ever made."
I FEEL THIS, ELENA. I CHOSE TO WATCH THIS STUPID SEASON INSTEAD OF JUST WRITING SMUT. WORSE LIFE CHOICE EVER, WR.
There were moments in isolation that I enjoyed. But the way that Bonnie died - it's like they put racist tropes for black women in a hat and pulled out a few and threw it in the story. And, of course, there was Klaus/Caroline. I'm supposed to get feels because Klaus decided not to kill Tyler so Caroline could have her first love (which, actually, was Matt) but he would be her ~last love.
But the most personally nauseating stuff for me was Damon/Elena.
Thing is, I was looking forward to Damon/Elena during Miss Mystic Falls, The Sequel. I'd made some peace with my issues with the pairing and even found things within them to enjoy. And I got the sire bond instead of organic development from what was already there.
Look, I'm happy that Elena call him out on his shit some. I'm glad they both acknowledged he was a terrible person who did terrible things to her. If I had to have an epic love confession in this episode, I'm glad it was the prefix that he's the wost choice she ever made.
What I'm not cool with is that the way the powers that be decided to write this ship is by taking away Elena's free will. By having her almost starve and have Damon sexually abuse her. By having her push a hallucination off of her body as his image taunted her with her fears. That he didn't let her go when he found out she was sired to him. That he used that sire bond against her. That he forced her to turn off her humanity and when he decided she didn't like what that turned her into, he killed her best friend right in front of her to tigger her humanity back on.
In itself, there's plenty to work with. I'm sure I'll find a way to make it work in my head, like I've done with so much of this terrible story and her relationship with the brothers. But right now I don't have the fucking energy.
Because Elena didn't get to scream and yell and hate that Damon violated her so deeply. That, in the end, Damon gets the girl and that's framed as romantic and good and finally. Damon worried so much about Elena going back to Stefan that it wasn't REAL and that's what I'm supposed to care about? Damon violated Elena's mind and body. And he's done countless times before the sire bond was even in place.
And instead of getting to shout at him, Elena confesses she loves him. And that she doesn't regret it.
This is the story they gave Elena with regards to Damon.
