All boobs are uneven, it's part of what makes all of our being neurotic about them so silly (which makes being neurotic about our labia even sillier)..
Its funny, like all women there are parts of my body I am unhappy with, but I am opposite. I love my boobs, they are nice full C's, I can still go braless if I want and they are as perky as if I was wearing one. I can still pass the pencil test (braless, lift up your boobs place a pencil under the boob, paralle to the ground and let go of the boob. If it drops to the floor, extra perky, if it is held in place by the boob, not as much).
But I am not thrilled with my labia. They are bigger than the ideal, not overwhelmingly large, but enough for partners to have confirmed is a little out of the norm. I am self concious about them. Makes me nervous during oral sex and therefore it is hard for me to enjoy so I avoid it.
I guess my point is it is all silly and all subjective but I don't think labia self-consciousness is weirder than boob self consciousness. I think surgery is a personal choice, but one that I think says something a little sad about the way our culture views women.
I guess my take is that breasts (etc.) are things that are seen every day by people based on how you dress (okay so I tend to go with fairly snug tops pretty universally, but most of the time our basic torso shape is visible, not even counting bathing suits..
The only people who see labia are people who we should be more confident in the company of. Not that we don't all get twitchy in the company of our partners from time to time, but...
But that's just me.. :) I figure I have enough parts of my body the whole world sees the shape of (through clothes) to be neurotic about, the bits that only myself, doctors and lovers see do not get neuroses.. lol.. :)
I knew it! My labia are secretly embarrassing me! I need to go get them fixed.
Thanks, Pei... For reminding me that not all women are defective. Articles like that sometimes make me wonder! Not that my own gender is much better....
What, isn't a man's worth dependent on the size of his cock? ;)
And you're welcome.. I have *more* than my fair share of stereotypical feminine issues (ask a_triath about my mood swings, shopping tendencies and the list of body parts on my body I am frustrated wtih.. *grin* But I also recognize how STUPID it all is.. I *do* dislike my inability to be "perfect" but I also know that the urge to be "perfect" is someting culturally instilled and is unnecessary.. It gives me a certain flippancy about my own neuroses that I think helps.
I can understand altering a portion of your body that can be seen, especially one that is highly visible to you. I can even understand altering your butt because people can see that, its there, its visible. But altering a portion of your body that nobody really sees, including YOU unless you actively go get a mirror!?!? GOOD GRIEF!!! thats like altering your feet for no good reason... shorting your second toe because it sticks out two millimeters beyond your big toe.
Dunno whether its normal or not! The point is that WHO CARES!! Haha! I think my toes are like that, so its probably not all that uncommon. Some people are made some ways, others other ways, diversity is what keeps it interesting. :)
Well, it IS a culture of shame (not necessarily puritanical, a more post-modern kinda thing that requires the generation of shame to motivate things like consumer behavior and gender role conformity). If elementary-school girls are wearing makeup to look "prettier" and already wondering how to stay thin, it is not surprising that ideas would pop up on how people who are "perfect" in other ways can now find something to obsess about.
GAHHHH!!!
Personally, I have never encountered a labia that I did not find enticing. . . .
