It was early still. It felt cooler than it should have, though the sun was up. The sky was a distant sort of blue, but it was whole still. Somehow, Calvin had got into the habit of looking for holes in the sky. It was a rather paranoid sort of habit, and he knew it. If the Ecthroi were going to tear a hole in the sky, it wasn't exactly going ( Read more... )

"Hey, Calvin?" Dairine can't pinpoint what it is that's wrong; it's like Peter Parker's spider-senses, or that feeling they call someone walking over your grave. Spot is tucked under her arm; there's a boy standing in front of Calvin that she doesn't know. "Everything okay?"

Calvin doesn't say anything at first, because what is there to say? Everything is fine, is wonderful, because Charles is here and close, and he hadn't realized how much he missed him 'til he was standing in front of him. But at the same time, things felt a very long way away from okay.

Charles Wallace answered for him. "Everything's fine. We're just catching up, because I just arrived." And he'd say it like that too, like a friendly forty year old with a kid's voice. "Do you know where Meg is? I miss her terribly."

That was when instinct took over, and Calvin said in a loud voice. "You're not going anywhere near her."

He was hoping that Charles would react like some sort of...robot or zombie or something. Anything that would give him away as not being the real Charles. But his eyes fell and he blinked in confusion, and it was just Charles.

"Cal, what? I...what's going on? I just want to see her. Someone told me you were here, I was awful worried about being here on my own."

Calvin had been in school during Meg's Naming of Mr. Jenkins. He had never really appreciated how impossible it seemed.

"Charles..." He started then shook his head. Maybe he was really going crazy. "Things have got terribly muddled."
