Becoming a teacher

The first thing I saw when I arrived was the Sentinel. I don't think giant robots programmed to kill were mentioned during my delightful conversation with the two headmasters of this school, but of course I did my research before applying in the first place. Indeed, it made me rather confident about my prospects. Nothing encourages ( Read more... )

Kitty slapped at the notification beep on her watch. The gate systems had identified the cab. She pulled out her PDA and downloaded the messages from the O*N*E. The man approaching wasn't obviously armed that the Sentinel could tell. He was within scheduled parameters for the new teacher, Arvin Sloane. Kitty looked up at her class.

"Brian, could you finish this, please?" she asked. "I have something to check out."

Kitty phased through the classroom wall and trotted down the stairs. She opened the front door in time to see the visitor turn back from the garden towards the door. He had a faint smile on his face. Kitty waited until he spotted her and smiled.

"You must be Mr. Sloane?" she said with a question to her tone. "I'm Katherine Pryde. Please, come in."

"Arvin Sloane," he replied, reaching out his hand to her. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms Pryde."

She looked athletic, with the ease in her movements that would have said "field agent" to him in other circumstances. There was an obvious age gap between her and the Frost/Summers duo. It occured to him that for the first time in years, he would be part of an organization where the entire senior staff was both decades younger and higher in rank.

Sydney, during the times she did not hate him quite so much, would have been immensely amused.

"The pleasure is mine," she replied, smiling. "I understand that you are going to be taking over some of the language classes, as well as geopolitics and strategy? Or am I remembering that wrong ( ... )

"Not at all," Sloane says in reply to Kitty's list of subjects. "Though it's my understanding chess clubs and monopoly rounds might be in the offering as well. Are you a player, Ms Pryde ( ... )

They had a new teacher. That's what Scott had told him. He'd said the guy had black ops experience, that he was missing memories. If Logan hadn't already intended to check him out, that sealed the deal. He may have passed Emma's telepathic probing, which Logan assumed had been the first step of the interview process, but if he had training like that, he probably knew how to hide things, too. Trusting people had never been one of Logan's specialties, and for good reason. But with his experiences and his enhanced senses, Logan might be able to find out a little more than they had, to find out if the guy was really legit.

And so, a day or two after the man had arrived, and mere hours after Logan's own return, Logan knocked on the door of the office newly-labeled "Sloane," and waited for the new guy to show himself.

[OOC: *waves* Scott!mun said I should come over here and say hi, so I'm doing so. I hope I'm not imposing. Also, I don't know anything more about Sloane than Logan does, but I'm more than happy to interact ( ... )

"Come in," Sloane calls, expecting one of the students. He's sitting reclined in his new chair, hands steepled, much as he would have received an agent reporting at SD-6 or APO. When Logan enters, his body language changes subtly; another staff member demands a different attitude, after all. He's new here, and in the business of winning everyone else's trust; projecting authority will only do in small measures.

"Ah," he says and rises courtously. "Mr. Logan, I presume?"

He did see a picture, both in the file Kitty Pryde gave him, and in the information he managed to access during his cursory exploration of the background of the staff. Which wasn't much, as far as Logan aka Wolverine was concerned. In the past, it wouldn't have been a problem to get the rest declassified, but right now, he didn't want to risk alerting old resources to his survival if he didn't have to.

He gives Logan a small smile and inclines his head. "Arvin Sloane."

[OOC: *waves back* Not all, and I'm happy to interact, too. In theory, their paths could have ( ... )

Logan nods, but doesn't bother to initiate a handshake. "So you're the new guy."

The man is old - mid to late sixties, at least - but age is all relative to Logan. He's taller than Logan is, which isn't unusual, but not nearly as tall as most of the men Logan knows. Medium build, nothing impressive - but he still has the look of someone who could kick your ass without a second thought if he needed to. And he probably had needed to, often, if what Scott mentioned about his background is true.

He doesn't smell like someone with malice on his mind, but he does have an agenda - that much Logan can tell. And the sooner he finds out what it is, the better.

"We don't get a lot of volunteers around here," Logan says, crossing his arms. "So you can see why I've got my suspicions. What's your deal?"

Logan's never cared much for courtesy.

[OOC: If you want to give me a rundown of who Sloane is, I'd love to read it (destroythemeek at yahoo dot com), but I like that the characters are both fairly clueless about each other at the moment ( ... )

Now Sloane could give Logan essentially the same speech he gave Emma and Scott. But he already had his audition. This is different. This is a test, and not conducted by only one person in the room, even if Logan might imagine it is. One usually can learn more about a man by drawing him out, and Sloane is here to learn.

"And here I hoped to remain a man of mystery a while longer," he replies mildly, with a touch of amusement. "Unless you feel you have a monopoly on that status? I have no intention of trespassing on anyone's territory, I can assure you of that."
