Matt Smith was great, but the film on the whole was a bit -- meh. I am now reading the book 'Chistopher and Jis Kind' and it's surprising how much stuff they changed in the film: people's names and family situations and everything. Also, the book details several years of Isherwood's life from when he went to Berlin until his journey to the US in 1938. The film focussed mainly on the Berlin part, so they would have done better to just make a film version of 'Goodbye to Berlin'.
I saw this. It was ok, but I thought Matt Smith was channelling his Doctor a bit too much and other than Christopher Isherwood the only really developed character was his girl friend (Lottie? was that her name?). Even his boyfriend seemed mostly there to be pretty and was kind of slight. After this and the Lennon Naked saga I'm beginning to wonder if it's just nostalgia making me think the BBC, especially BBC2, used to put out better, more challenging films than this.
That's pretty much how I'm feeling to be honest. I felt that CAHK concentrated more on Christopher and His Friend Jean Ross. I mean ... I couldn't even describe the characters of either Caspar or Heinz or tell you why Christopher fell in love with them other than they were male and he was gay. It was all about him and her, with some mansmex put in for teh prittiz.
I mean... Heinz spent a year in hard labour and a couple of years in prison because he loved Christopher. I saw no real example of that love, because the film was more concerned with another relationship that was ultimately the focus of the piece.
As for Matt Smith 'chanelling his Doctor', I'm unsure. I think that's just the way Matt Smith is. The way he speaks and the way he holds himself in both roles is pretty much how he speaks and holds himself when he's being himself, but I could still see the differences

See, Jean was pretty much the only character I felt anything for and I couldn't even remember her name.
Yeah the whole thing felt very slight.I get that they only had an hour and a half, but still. At least it made me want to read the book.
