Did you see the episode? What did you think?

I was just typing my reaction while you were posting your question, so I'm going to point down for the answer :D

Thank you. I haven't seen it yet, and I've wanted to read reviews, but they've been scarce on the ground. Now I know why.

Obviously I still want to watch it for Colin, though! :)

It's interesting to see Colin play a character I don't like. I've just seen a couple of scenes (because I find it dull, dull, dull, my god it's dull, it's so desperately dull and tedious and stuffy and boring and desperately dull), so I can't really give fair judgement, but from what I've seen I think he's a bit of a douche who needs to grow a pair and no amount of comforting Patrick at the end is going to make up for Jimmy not standing up for his friend earlier.

I was very tempted to make a cap of the scene where he's all but burping in Phoebe's face while chomping his sandwich and tipping ashes onto the china, but I prefer my Colin pretty so I went the 'easy on the eyes route'.

At some point I'm going to wrestle through those three episodes. Until then I'm going to enjoy capping his floppy hair.

P.S. Second time he's playing an Irish character and he still doesn't get to use his own accent!

I've finally watched all three eps (and yes, I watched the third one first!), and agree with you that the show is terribly dull. It's slow-paced, predictable, unimaginative. Even the look of it is just so dark and grimy and sad that it's depressing, rather than gritty. I know I'm biased, but even my non-Merlin/Colin lovin' friends and family who've watched the show have expressed the opinions to the effect that Colin is the only bright spot in an otherwise very lackluster production.

The show was not dull. I suggest everyone watch all three episodes, it's very gripping and there's lots of twists and turns. It deals with a lot (in episode 1) revolving around the catholic church in 50's Ireland where they were selling babies.

"Colin is the only bright spot in an otherwise very lackluster production."

LMAO! Colin had a total of about 20 mins screen time in a 3 episode series if he was the best thing about it, well, you need to get your eyes checked. Gabriel Byrne was amazing as Quirke and carried that series. Aisling Franciosi who played Phoebe was did an admirable job, her character had a lot to deal with and her relationship with Quirke was heartbreaking. As much as I love Colin his character was self-centered and a bit of a douche.

The fact that SOME fans only bothered to watch the third episode just for Colin, is a little sad and quite frankly they missed out.

If you had read my reply more carefully, you would see that I did watch all three episodes. They were not to my taste, but I frankly don't see why that should annoy or offend you as much as it obviously does. Did you write, produce, or direct the show? Even if you had, I've a right to my opinion, I put it forward politely, and I stand by it. You've a right to your opinion too, only it's a pity you are so rude and childish about it.

As for Colin Morgan's role, I was speaking about the third episode specifically, and not about all three episodes. (Again, I believe I was quite clear on that point.) His role is small, yes, but his performance stood out to me. Again, that's my opinion. And I was commenting on Colin's acting; I never said I admired Jimmy. He is, as you say, a bit of a douche. (As are you.)

Its a very grim, depressing series, and yes, slow and boring (the books OK I suppose, I'm surprised they made a series of them tbh - I doubt they'll make the series of the next 3 books)

But yeah, right, innocent my a**se!!

interesting that they changed a fair bit of this episode from the book -maybe because of the subject matter, - and that end scene (and the pub scene) with Patrick is definitely not there!. I remember getting the feeling as I read the book that Jimmy certainly knew more than he let on about April (and her brother)
Jimmy IS a bit of a dick though

The scene that made me dislike Jimmy most is when he's warning Phoebe. I don't so much mind him gripping her arm, but the way he switches from that forceful 'just watch your step' to that smooth 'that's all I'm saying, or you'll be on that boat to London too', that's almost nasty. The switch of expression on his face. A drunk who lets his jealousy talk louder than his concern and doesn't have himself in check; walk away Phoebe!

And I didn't think the end scene with Patrick made much sense, so I wonder why they added it. Looks like they wanted to show a more compassionate, sympathetic side of Jimmy.

I do agree, there were some strange directing or acting choices

You know, I actually understood what motivated Jimmy there. He knew that Patrick was "having it off" with April or whatever the turn of phrase was. He was obviously one of the "kinds of men that make you wonder what in the name of Jaysus..." in Jimmy's mind. He felt sure that Patrick was involved in whatever was going on with April and didn't want Phoebe to get hurt ( ... )

He may be playing an dick in this, but Colin looks good doing it.

I am really looking forward to watching this. I love John Banville's work, although I haven't read this particular series. I have managed to catch one of the scenes with Colin, whose nuanced, classed Dublin accent is incredibly well done. Also, I like that he's playing an unpleasant character, although you would never be able to tell that from tumblr.

What really amuses me is that after watching this, some people think that his voice has dropped since Merlin. I am a little amazed that after all these years of watching Colin Morgan they haven't figured out that he changes his voice to suit the character, and that in Merlin itself, he changed his voice as Merlin aged. It's one of the distinctive things about him.
