Love their early friendship, and in my head had a relationship that didn't really work for various reasons (well Arthur and Lancelot for one) so they just remained good friends. I'd do anything for him too!!!
'tis a little bit like choosing a favourite child. I am however, eternally grateful that Gwen lost her yellow tablerunner/dress in the S4, although the things I've read today that JCJM have said about costumes (among other things) just makes me wish they'd go back to their cave!
Well you may not have liked the table runner dresses (and apparently Angel agrees with you) but they were a lot closer to period accurate than what they have her geared up in for S5!
Don't get me wrong, the gowns are gorgeous and this show has never been particularly concerned with period accuracy but they get further and further from reality every year!
(Then again, having poor Katie in a wasp-waisted corset for all of S4 was about as appropriate in medieval Britain as a grandfather clock in ancient Rome!)
So it makes me wonder why they have stuck to Merlin's outfit so doggedly. He's the only one (except for Sir Leon) I can think of who hasn't had a significant wardrobe change in the entire run of the show!
They are both so SO cute in this scene. Thinking back, it was this relationship that was originally a big part of what endeared me to the show---that adorable sweetness and awkwardness and affection that turned into a lovely friendship. And, actually, the way the show neglected and then mishandled that friendship, and Gwen as a character herself---reaching a peak in S4, when Merlin did not go to Gwen to offer her comfort or counsel after her banishment---is a big part of what has made me disappointed with the show, too. I really miss their friendship, and I hope S5 makes some attempt to repair or promote it. One of my magic reveal fantasies is that Gwen finds out before Arthur does, and becomes Merlin's confidant, as Gaius has been and as Lancelot was, and maybe smooths the way for his reveal to Arthur.
It's true--I'd forgotten that. But even so, I missed a scene where he talks with her about what happened. I was expecting it, and instead there was this very awkward bit with her pushing a cart out of Camelot while he just watches from a distance.
I guess it feels like the writers and/or producers think that once they've established a relationship, they don't need to work at it any more; they just take it for granted.
I don't think it was Merlin's village we saw Helios raid. I got the impression that Gwen did not initially go to Ealdur when banished. Maybe it her friends' village from a couple of episodes before. The writers probably intentionally kept it vague. After Gwen was turned into a doe by Morgana and shot by Mithian, Merlin was unsuccessful in persuading her to return to Camelot. Maybe he made the condition of "Okay I'll return to Camelot without you as long as you promise you'll go to Ealdur and stay with my mother."
I really hope this year gives me more interaction between them, because they're one of my favorite dynamics on the show and it doesn't get nearly enough love. She's been his little partner in crime for years. Surely that's going to come in to play more now that she's queen. Now she can access more things and they don't have to snoop around as much hahaha

"Ask Merlin, you know I'd grant you anything. I mean...not anything, obviously not anything..."
S1 was my favourite until S4. Now they tie for favourite :D
