I do love that scene. It's like we finally get a glimpse of the old Merlin & Gwen friendship again. And man did Colin act his sweet little arse off in that scene! Well, the entire episode really. Lovely!
It is a really lovely scene, and it does remind us that they have a lovely bond, which seems to have been lacking (I''m sure that the writers can't write for Gwen at all, her best scenes are deleted!) along with that in 4.11 you can really see their friendship
I don't even care that they're not tagged---I just love them all, including his knobby knees, which I believe you and I discussed once, RC, and agreed were lovely, like everything else on this almost ridiculously lovely man.
And yes, I adore this scene, though not because of his reaffirmed bond with Gwen, because I suspect the show has turned me off her character for good at this point. I love this scene for Merlin alone, his sadness, confusion, frustration, for Colin's beautiful performance of all these (and more). And I adore the way he's sitting there all folded up, because no one does folded up like Colin. (I'll bet even the trickiest yoga positions are nothing to him--flexible, pliant boy that he is. UNF.) And then there's the lighting of this scene, which is gorgeous, and makes every frozen moment appear like a painting.
It's the folded bit that gets me. I loved this ep because I really do like the relationship between Merlin and Gaius and I loved how intense Merlin was in it.
What a beautiful pic. I love this for all the reasons others have stated--Merlin's pose and profile, the lighting and set design, the bond with Gaius that the scene is about, although...I wasn't crazy about Gwen's part in this scene: "I'll talk to him..." (Arthur), she says, the implication being that Arthur is hers to influence, but not Merlin. This show cannot write Gwen to save their lives.
