I wish I could have seen him in any of his plays and sure hope to get an opportunity to make up for that at some point.

Absolutely on the older Merlin comments. It is remarkable how much older he seems in this shot.

Yes, and it works the same way in the other shots of this character as well, so it must be the combination clothes + beard (because that's more than just a scruff really) and pose.

Whatever it is, it works for me (and I'm clearly not alone!)
