That scene hurts so good. I always end up feeling deep sadness for Merlin and pride for Colin.

I still have to cry whenever I watch that episode. It's so touching. I think I won't be able to keep it dry when Merlin meets Freya again.

I hope there will be a decent scene between them. Not just Freya handing over Excalibur and that's it. Although I haven't a clue what more there could possibly be at this point. I mean, she died, right?

Yeah, and I am a crybaby so I expected to be kind of a mess, but it took me a couple of times reviewing to get past the feeling numb with sadness to actually tear up *is complicated*

You're not kidding. That scene absolutely guts me when I watch it. He's so raw and real in it --and the moment when he's sending the boat out into the water, and has a moment of hesitation before he speaks the spell to light it on fire... it kills me.

Yes, that moment when he begins the spell and stops, overwhelmed, before he steels himself again. Colin puts these small things into his performances that take them past just good. Another moment that springs to mind is his scene with Balinor where
Balinor tells him that he won't know if he is a dragonlord until he has faced his first dragon. Merlin has this slight sinking, so small but it really expresses his disappointment. He has already faced Kilgarrah and failed.

Oh, I know!! I loved when I found out that the start-stop-start of the spell was Colin's own doing. It just gave more weight to my respect for him as an actor. He's so, so amazing.

and I'll have to go rewatch the ep you mentioned and watch for that.
