Lisbeth is not someone who celebrates Valentine's day. All the kids at school get really into it and she does not mainly because when all the cards are handed out she doesn't get any nor does she give any. The exception is of course Taiki. Like most things Taiki is the exception to the rule. Her mama's boss was getting rid of a whole bunch of old card stock and Valentine's that he had been saving since his dad ran the store. It's where Lisbeth found the card to put in Taiki's Valentine's box.
Taiki has received three(!!) Valentines this year! He's very excited. One from Lisbeth, one from his mother, and one from the little girl in his closet. Well... The one from the little girl in his closet is just a blank slip of paper, but it's the thought that counts.
Chiyako suggest Taiki take Lisbeth some cookies but the little boy gives his mother a dubious look -- he's pretty sure that's a girl thing to do. However Chiyako insists that he can just give them to her as a friend, especially since they went to all the trouble of making them.
And so he does. Taiki troops through the ultra-safe streets of Swepan to deliver Lisbeth's Valentine: sweets and a super glittery handcrafted card similar in design to his envelope.
Lisbeth doesn't have anything (or anyone) who lives in her closet but she has to imagine that having a little girl living in your closet has to be unsettling at times. It's very nice of her to send him a Valentine though. Even if it is creepy.
It is Saturday morning. Lisbeth's mama slept in and then got up to takes Camilla to the store to get . . . Something. Lisbeth doesn't care. She has the apartment all to herself so she is doing a little bit of cleaning, namely the dishes and making sure all the clothes are picked up and tossed in the laundry basket. The trash gets tossed away as well before taking a seat out on the front with an apple.
Taiki, Kishiko, and her little dog all have a great time! One of these days Taiki will make introductions all around -- he's told his closet-friend quite a lot about Lisbeth and she's very interested. Besides, creepy is relative...
He has never been to Lisbeth's before but somehow knows exactly where he's going. Shrugging his backpack into place, Taiki moves steadily down the sidewalk. Lisbeth is out front and he marches right up, on a mission.
"Hello. Thank you for the card." First thing is first: manners.
Lisbeth is never annoyed when he shows up, he is her friend and she finds that they have similar interests and he is not a bad person. He is a very good person actually and even though she is not very good at reading people she knows that about him.
Lisbeth starts in on the story, of how Tintin and everyone goes up into the mountains because Tintin has a dream that his friend is still alive. There is even Yeti in the book, Yeti snow steps in the snow and the Sherpa says that Yeti took the Captain's last bottle of whiskey. They get up to the plain crash and Tintin and Snowy starts to try and find the scent of Tintin's missing friend.
Taiki is a very good listener. He doesn't fidget or interrupt while she talks and appears attentive and interested. The yeti is exciting -- he just drew pictures of those on their snow-fort last time she came over! This story has many of his favorite themes: mystery, snow and snow creatures, foreign places, and funny names. He likes Tintin and his dog -- he wonders if Ume could do the same thing?
When she pauses and flips to the next page he looks up at her, and then back down at the book. Taiki's taking as much of this in as he can.
On the next page, Thackery, the guide decides that Chang is dead and to abandon the search party. What a trooper this guy. Tintin, Snowy and Haddock travel in the direction of a scarf that Tintin spotted on a cliff face. While attempting to climb upwards and after having his pick-axe caught with St. Elmo's fire, Haddock loses his grip and hangs perilously over a cliff edge, impaling Tintin, who is attached to the other end of the rope, upon a rock. He tells Tintin to cut the rope to save himself, but Tintin refuses, saying that they will either both be saved or they die together. It's all very exciting, she has no idea why Tintin's parents don't stop him from going off and nearly getting himself killed a lot. Perhaps that was discussed in a previous issue but Lisbeth hasn't read it.
Looking over at Taiki she pauses when there is a moment to do so to make sure he is following along, he looks like he is. "If you don't understand something let me know." Though it is pretty nice having someone to talk to and read with.
So... intense! Taiki is so utterly absorbed and enthralled by this book! He'll definitely be begging the library for Japanese versions. He doesn't understand a lot but it is all still very interesting.
"The yeti should come and help!" He pipes up when she pauses and addresses him. "They should call for him. I bet he would know where the person is and then Tintin and Snowy and Haddock wouldn't get lost." Taiki is concerned about Tintin being hurt but with the confidence of a six (and a half) year old, he knows the guy will be okay. Even if he dies then Tintin will just be a ghost -- that'd probably be more handy in this situation.
