Three of the four high security Arkham escapees are in custody. Sort of. All three are beig held for treatment and observation; a gun shot wound to the head, a brain tumor and recently awakening from a coma brought on by blood loss by a severe physical assault ( Read more... )

Simon might be easier to visit first, simply by virtue of being finished with all his surgeries and consultations. He's unstable, personality vacillating wildly depending on the time of day, but mornings and early afternoon are still a good time to visit him, if you don't mind the nearly-paralyzing guilt and tears. Except for the tendon-damage to one shoulder and some lingering weakness to his ribs, all the injury that Walter did is scarred over. All the physical injury.

He nods miserably. "Mostly in the subways... I don't- I can- I can remember some of their faces?" He wants to help with identification, he really does. Anything to help relieve the guilt.

(Just humans.)

"That could be helpful." Jim debates sending down a sketch artist or having someone compile a file of the photos and letting Simon look through those.

Granted, with the Narrows gassing, the last two years has had a large number of missing persons. And even more people who just disappeared with no one to report them missing.

"I want to help," he mutters, squeezing his eyes shut. Trying not to cry in front of the cop. "I- Fuck. I feel like I've been dreaming for the last three years."

Jim is not a therapist. He is trained to help calm hysterical witnesses and read evasive suspects. And he wants to say something comforting to the scary young man in front of him.

Except he also had to comfort the young officer who found what was left of Simon's most recent victim. The man ended up quitting.

"Any information you can give us will be a help. And it will reflect well on you, when your case is evaluated." Because with Simon's new out look, Jim bets it will be reevaluated soon.

Deep, ragged breathes for a few seconds, before he can nod without unraveling. "... I'll go to trial, now? And be convicted?"

"Not any time soon, no. But I'm certain your therapist will reevaluate you. And if you continue to improve, they may try to show that you are no longer a danger to society." Which seems unfair to the families of the people that Simon killed. But if the boys mental illness was cured, is it fair to keep him in Arkham for something he couldn't control?

Questions like these are why Jim Gordan would never become a judge.

He tries to rub his face, but has to half-sit up and bring his face down to his cuffed hands to do it. "What about jail, though? I- so many people..." Simon never knew that guilt could hurt, but it's like a slow bleed in his gut, has been ever since he woke and remembered. He can't imagine living the rest of an actual life feeling like this.

"I honestly don't know about that, Simon. I do know that judges look favorably on Arkham patients who are proactive in their treatment. And who cooperate with the police."

He spreads his hands helplessly, what little he can. "Okay. Okay. What else can I do?"

"You've done very well so far. Mostly, if you remember anything else that could help us find any remains, a detective will be here in a few days to talk to you again. They'll be from the missing persons unit, and may have a file of pictures for you to look though." If Simon recognizes just one face, it may help trigger memories for others.

Granted, Jim hasn't cleared this with Dr. Drake yet. Maybe he'll just call her this time.

"Yeah, okay. Okay. I can do that." Sniff. "Can I ask a favor?"

"You can." Jim can almost feel a Bat-glare settling on him.

Fidget fidget. "My mom hasn't come to see me... And she won't answer when the staff here calls her."

Bat-glare be damned. The kid just wants to see his mom. (The serial killer wants to see his mom.... Shouldn't ignore that part.)

"I'll see what I can do, Simon."

His smile is pathetic (but at least the dentist had at him while he was comatose). If it's the cops asking her to come, she has to come see him. Right? Right?

"Thank you, sir. Very much."
