"Oh, jeez."

The voice is a tiny one, and Alyx could be excused for not hearing it. Few people ever do. The speaker, after all, is smaller than most grains of rice- and is currently tucked inside a flat-sided borosilicate glass test tube hidden under Gordon's clothes.

Which isn't to say that the speaker can't hear what's going on outside, and do her best to shout- as far as her best can go, anyway.

"Hey! Hey! What's going on out there?"

"Never liked him anyway," Gordon murmurs. Not that he ever met the man personally that he can remember; he was at Black Mesa all of five months before everything went to hell.

The wall trick gets a surprised look out of him. Apparently they're on their way to the Batcave.

The corridor beyond is dark and narrow; it's a challenge for Gordon to get through it without brushing up against Kei. "Funny you showing up on this day in particular," remarks Alyx as they walk. "We've been helping people escape the city on foot. It's a dangerous route to my father's lab, through the old canals..." A hopeful smile. "Today, we're finally on the verge of having a better way."

"Uh," says Gordon. He'd hold up a finger in a 'wait a moment please' gesture if his arms weren't aching.

Sati, however, has no such limitation. "That sounds promising," the minuscule daemon says. "What kind of way would that be?"

"You'll see in a minute. Dr. Kleiner can explain it better than I can."

Down a flight of stairs and around a corner, they come to a stop in front of a bank of vending machines proudly selling 'Dr. Breen's Private Reserve.'

"Here. Let me buy you a drink."

Alyx pulls a coin from her pocket and, with practiced ease, drops it in the slot, pushes half a dozen drink buttons in a complex sequence, then taps on the side of the machine. The vending machine's front swings open to reveal another doorway.

Okay, this is a little bit much even for the Batcave. Gordon glances ceilingwards and mutters, "Computer, end program."

No dice.

Might as well follow the woman who is twenty years too old and the tiger without saying anything else....

"Oh, and by the way?" says Alyx. "Nice to finally meet you."

...and you know what? In spite of everything, it was.
