Alyx ran.

She didn't know where she was, or where she was trying to go. All she knew was that there were things coming out of the air all around her and one of them had killed her mother and they were going to kill her too and she had to run.

The man, inasmuch as it was a man, didn't look particularly nightmarish. If anything, a first glance at him would leave impressions of nothing more than a cold and particularly calculating businessman. But the longer one looked at him, the easier it would be to notice the clues that hinted at his true nature. His eyes, bright blue-green and shimmering in the slow light, were surrounded by cavernous sockets. Even his skin itself had an otherworldly quality, stretched over too-thin bones.

When he opened his mouth, a rasp escaped his lips as a precursor to speak. His thin lips formed a frown that could almost be called sympathetic, if not for the odd tilt of his greying eyebrows. Finally, he cleared his throat, quick and efficient, before continuing.

"No, my DEAR," he states simply, adjusting his tie before continuing. "On the contrary... you are very much-" He paused again, unnaturally breaking the flow of his sentence.

"Alliiivvve.

"It is so nice to finally meet each other face-to-face, hmmm?"

"I don't know you." Alyx shrank back away from the man. Everything about him screamed wrong, wrong, wrong.

He walked a little closer, the click of his shoes ringing louder than they should. His face arranged itself into an expression of feigned concern, studying Alyx with those eyes, before he spoke again.

"I must apologize, then, that I lack the time to properly introduce myself.

"On the other hand, Missss Vance, my employers and I have been watching you for quite some tiime."

"What for?" Alyx asked, her voice slightly stronger than before.
