Stripes of wan sunlight paint the floor of the Prior's study and the antiquated heating system lets out the occasional clank and groan that interrupts the soft music that's playing; Bach, even after so long. He's not so set in his ways as he once was, certainly, but some traditions are worth maintaining ( Read more... )

It's early morning on Osiris, and Gabriel is beginning the day in his home office. With coffee at hand, he reviews the latest data reports, making note of this or that item in need of response as he reads.

The subdued chime signaling an incoming wave draws his attention, and he turns his chair to face the Cortex screen-- newly upgraded with advanced comm encryption, set to the highest available legal standard. It's expensive technology, but worth it, particularly now.

He touches 'accept', answering the screen with a cordial smile.

"Gabriel Tam."

"It's always a pleasure to hear from you, Prior," Gabriel replies with a smile.

"Your wave is welcome at any time."

He laughs quietly.

"That's probably for the best, since it's likely I shan't be able to control when I have access to terminals, and relative timezones so frequently defeat me."

A pause. Although not as gifted as his children, Gabriel Tam has never been less than intelligent, less than quick.

"I see; you're to be traveling, then?"

Polite curiosity in tone, but something of very clear interest as well in his direct inquiring glance.

"Much as I might enjoy it, I can't go spending all my time running things here. If I potter off every now and again it keeps the Shepherds on their toes and allows me to do a little more in the way of good doing; I fear if I stay put too long I'll lose my touch."

His mouth twitches, slightly, at the corners. It doesn't seem he can quite keep his smile under control.

"It's part of my duty, you know, to carry the word to those that need to hear it."

"Well, then." His slow smile is bright and clear, and not unlike his son's when Simon is truly happy about something.

"I'll wish you safe travels and much luck in your good works, Prior."

"I have you to thank for the inspiration."

He echoes Gabriel's smile, nodding his head politely.

"Above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.

Zao àn, Mr Tam."

"Wan an," he returns, and sits back in his chair as the chime sounds to signal the end of the call.

Gabriel remains still for some moments, considering this unexpected development.

And when he goes back to work, he's smiling.
