Shikamaru shifted a bit in her grip, opening his eyes to peer over at his partner. Though physically completely lax, he was wide awake. He'd been trying for sleep, but he'd been as unsuccessful as Temari when it came to actually achieving it. There was too much to worry over, too much left to think through, and too little time to make sure that everything went as it should.

This would be their last opportunity, but so much was being left to chance...

"Can't sleep either?"

Temari propped her chin on his chest so she could look down at him. "Not at all. My mind won't turn off tonight. Same for you?"

No matter how badly she wanted out, there was the fear of the unknown. Was it any better out of here, or was it going to get worse? Was it pointless? Were they all going to die in a fiery explosion in just a few days time?

Little regrets nagged at her, reminding her of her brother's suggestion that she not wait. Nothing was every guaranteed.

"Yeah. And I don't think it'll get much easier tomorrow." Or the day after that. In all likelihood, Shikamaru probably wouldn't sleep much at all until this was all finished with. Of course, he wouldn't have to worry too much about that if things took a turn for the worse, but...

"I hate the waiting."

"Getting the time to plan is great, but now it's just too much time to think." She traced random patterns on his chest. Edgy, but with no interest in getting out of bed. Temari treasured the quiet times that they got alone together.

"Is there anything left to actually do?"
