224 - Nara Shikamaru [VIDEO]

[Shika's somewhere somewhat dim, the room behind him mostly lit with the glow of computer screens. He's got that serious face on once more. Must be decision time again.]The Consortium is coming and we need to move. This station currently moves at less than half the speed of whatever they'll be sending our way, so we don't have a lot of time to ( Read more... )

Lets go with three then.

That's what I was thinking.

I am sure we have enough supplies to set up camp, plus we have this as a main hub.

And there are enough of us who know what we're doing, we could live off the land given enough time.

How long do you think we have?

Before they get here? Three months. Maybe four.

Can we reach option three and set up a base in that time? [He's pretty sure no one's going to want to hole up in a Consortium-based planet but they have to think smart.]

I don't think we can get close enough to any of the locations in that time.

[Have an overly excitable seventeen year old witch.]

That's what I was saying weeks ago mate!

We could probably settle option 3 easy enough. Unless I could make a spell to boost the engine's output. I could work on that!

[Okay, so that's weird.]

Yeah, I know. [Siiiigh. He knows they need to move quick, but everyone here is so impatient.] But if we don't take the time to make sure the station itself runs smoothly, we don't get anywhere at all.

... Just don't do anything without running it by Defense and Engineering. Magic and machines don't always mix.

Yeah, I know. I've been running scenario's with divination. Possible outcomes and such. It's probably best if we have one group start preparations for the colonization and the other group preparing for the attack.

Shikamaru, you're normal. [He breathes a sigh of relief.]

My girlfriend is a heavy metal bass player this week. Takes a little adjusting.

we can't just be focused on the planets. We need a long term defensive strategy against whatever the consortium is sending, and you can't forget Val is still here and technically in charge. There's no promise she'll steer us towards anything. She needs to be taken out or controlled before any sort of colonization can happen at all.

Yeah, I saw that. [Tiny smirk.]

Actual colonization is too far off to take into account right now. What we need to focus on is picking a direction and moving before the Consortium gets here. We're not going to reach any planet before they catch up to us, but if we get going now we have more time to put our defenses together. Staying alive is priority number one, and Val can be counted on for that much.

[Call him crazy, but he trusts Val. As much as one can trust an experiment-crazy computer program.]

How can we know? All we've got is what she's told us, and she's smarter than we know. I can't imagine she'll be too happy to let us leave this station, or even go towards a place where we would be free.

I mean, sure, we can tell her to set a course for winds of fortune or whatever, but we've got to be focused on our safety from inside as well as from out.

[Not going to try and argue too much for Val, since he knows it'd make him sound like a loony.]

I get your point, but we don't have time to tinker with Val and fight off the Consortium at the same time. Val may or may not want us free, but she definitely doesn't want us dead, and that's short or long term.

I want to know why they left the second place and why they haven't settled the third place. There has to be a reason, and I don't want to just walk into a trap.

I'm sure there are reasons, and we'll keep looking into them, but we're pretty limited as far as options go.

wind_wielder February 23 2012, 01:59:07 UTC
Right. I guess the third one's better, we want to stay away from the Consortium, and after everything we've been through, I don't think going without buildings will be a problem.

[Nodnod.] There're enough of us who know how to live off the land that we could manage. The rest can follow.
