He always did enjoy spying on the minds of new students. They were as Emmet liked to call them ‘fresh meet’. Not in the literary sense, more in the way, that their minds had not yet been assimilated in that of their peers.

And so, when Forks welcomed jet another ‘new girl’ to its high school, Edward just couldn’t resist the temptation of listening in just what that new mind was really thinking of everything here.

But what he hadn’t been prepared for, was the fact that not only had she already started to observe them... no, that she had in fact already made a list with characteristics that differentiated them from the rest of Fork’s population.

The list of course consisted of things everyone around them had already noted, like their pale appearance, the unearthly beauty... the fact that they stuck together and didn’t mix with others.

But then there were other things, things that other people hadn’t ever noticed about them; partly because their beauty always distracted them. But Chloe, the new girl, noticed as the only one that they never ate their food; that it ‘lay there as decoration’ at lunchtimes. And interestingly enough, when he had taken a bit of something off his tray, she had thought that he was ‘challenging her to think differently of them’.

Her next thought though, would have made his heart speed up, if he had a beating heart. ‘Almost as if he could read my mind...’

When he had told the others about her thoughts, it had been Rose who convinced everyone in the family - save for him and Carlisle - that it would be best if Chloe suddenly disappeared... permanently.

Full of determination, Rose and Emmet had prepared the next day to take care of Chloe... only she never showed up. And when Edward read Charlie Swans mind - her uncle - he found out that she had returned to her own home in Smallville. The place weird things happen on a regular basis.

She really had been such a strange girl... And Edward found himself wondering if he’d see her again sometime.
