apparently, the gowan sound is cool again

i've been listening to mercury rev's new album, snowflake midnight, and keane's new album, perfect symmetry.

both of these bands seem to have been listening to an excess of lawrence gowan lately, if their latest musical offerings are any indication.

the lead off track of snowflake midnight has synth-bass backbone that sounds oddly similar to ( Read more... )

New Keane!? That's cheating! I'm actually really excited to hear that album. I wasn't a big fan of them when I only knew them by radio play. Then I heard frog prince and it all changed. Definitely on my endless list of all time favourites.

Also, I now have Strange Animal in my head... Thanks :P

it IS NOT cheating. last.fm is streaming the new keane album for free, leading up to its official release on monday.

and yeah, try listening to the mercury rev track snowflake in a hot world, and tell me you don't start humming along strange animal. :)

i know it sounds scary, but all i could do at the time was laugh. after a musically awesome opening set by the two minute miracles, the mercury rev performance seemed like a farce.
