They could (and frequently were!) most certainly used in that way...

And ohhh icon conversations. *le sigh* Those were the days.

It's a sad day when you have to let icons go. :( But letting go can be kind of liberating. I often found the icon obsession kind of stressful at times.

I'm not sure if any of us can tell if it's a paid or unpaid account. I love all the icons too, but seriously I only use a few. I should do the same, as I to agree, why paid the extra for something I'm not using.

Yeah, I can't tell either. There's supposedly ads, but I have an excellent adblock so *shrug*. :)

As it happens, I just switched off my adblocker (for reasons that may or may not have to do with A Certain Show set in a far off time and place).

And apparently, if you're not logged in there's a jaunty wee YouTube video about how wonderful LJ is in the middle of the screen.

There are apparently four ads, base and right-hand side, but in three browsers they are not visible, so maybe no one has purchased them.

Arrrghhh. Hard to give up the icons, but if one can't justify the expense....yeah.

And honestly, it still looks good to me.
