Christmas Dinner: Prime Rib

Dec 26, 2015 18:13

Beef isn't on the menu too often at my house. Not that I don't love it, but chicken and pork are more affordable and usually on sale. However, I decided to splurge this year and make a British themed Christmas menu with the focus on a prime rib.

It was huge for a single person, almost 5 pounds, but the price was right (<$30), and I figured I'd get ( Read more... )

dessert, potatoes, cheese, beef, veggies, cake, tarts, christmas, fruit, british

We did prime rib last night, but it didn't come out as pretty as yours when it came to the slicing. I wish TBG would use the proper knives, but he insists on using 4" chef knife, which really isn't up to the task. Horse to water, don't you know?

We also did baked potato and opted for Brussels sprouts as a veg. We didn't feel up to dessert, so TBG ate peppermint bark and I had another glass of wine.

Great shots, as always!

I used an electric knife that was given to my dad years ago and got pretty decent cuts considering the fact that it was only about 4 inches wide to start with. If I had had to use a regular carving knife I would have made a mess of it. I was going to do brussel sprouts but forgot to buy any when I went on my last grocery run so I just went with what I had in the vegetable drawer ... carrots.

Wine would have been a nice finish to the meal.

Maybe that's what I need to get him next year for Christmas. It would make cutting easier.

Thank you. There was a ton of meat on the prime rib. And so tasty.

Dear Maria your British celebration dinner looks perfect! You must have had some mighty good leftover meals since. I will be looking forward to the imaginative ways you used the leftovers!

Funny thing a turkey is, we didn't have turkey on Christmas Day either and we had company. I forewarned my guests, actually I asked them what they wanted and nobody wanted turkey. We talked about it more at the table and it turns out nobody cares for turkey much. My friend said she would love to have the turkey spread without the turkey. And she used to be the queen of turkey dinners. In fact I met her at one of her turkey dinners 48 years ago ha!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Thank you for your New Year's wish. I hope 2016 is a wonderful year for you.

I froze away containers of prime rib keeping only a few meals' worth which are now gone are are the sides. I look forward to eating the rest over the next month.

Stilton plating 1 makes a gorgeous still life -- looks like an Old Masters painting! Stilton plating 2 appeals to me more on an edible level, however, because it's more accessible for eating, what with things being cut up into slices and chunks. That would not last long at my house :)

Thank you. I didn't want to 'handle' the fruit and cheese too much but for eating, digging into a whole poached pear is messy and I can see it flying into someone's lap. It DOES make a nice presentation.

The second plate was devoured quickly and neatly. :)

Most of the Stilton was rewrapped carefully and ended up in the deli drawer of my fridge. Besides the gougeres, I'm thinking of making a cheese souffle or two.

Thank you. I had set the table with a traditionally (Romanian) decorated cloth from the day before when I made a meatless menu. Again, that's a tradition that my mom used to have.

There were leftovers from both days.
