Mini Baked Alaskas

"Baked Alaska" has been on my cooking bucket list for some time, but I didn't think I'd ever get around to it, because it's meant for a large group. After all, what can you do with a huge dome of cake, ice cream and baked meringue once you've taken out that single piece to photograph and taste, when you live alone? Haha! Yes, you're a good planner! ;D The mini size was a good idea - I might end up with making a large size and eating it all up. We tend to forget the basic such as making a small portion. =P It looks delicious! The dome shape definitely catch my attention and I would feel special eating it ALL by myself... :)

With your two little ones and your husband, I'm sure a full sized Baked Alaska wouldn't go to waste. My mini version wasn't so much as a dome as a tower. :)

Oh, I've made these and they never cease to amaze our guests. Our recipe is a bit different, but it tastes great and in the end, that's what matters.

I know some recipes use a hot sugar syrup to cook the meringue but I decided to wing it especially as my egg whites had been in the fridge for about 4 days.

It pays to be careful. We always bake ours and then tack a torch to it for the crispy look.

No torch at my house ... I've been discouraged from waving around an open flame. :)

It wasn't as dark as many baked Alaskas I've seen but I got some melting from the vanilla ice cream so I pulled it out after 10 minutes. I didn't freeze the meringued Alaska for 30 minutes so that was probably the reason. An hour of freezing before baking wouldn't hurt either but making the mini baked Alaska was a last minute decision and it was late so I was anxious to cut it open while there was still some natural light to take the pictures.

I think you're a very good planner! I've been meaning to make Bombe Alaska for a long while and this is the second blog I've seen recently featuring this dessert. What a good idea to make an individual serving! I think I'll try that xx http://hotlyspiced.com

I think most people would find individual bombes much easier than a big one. I'm curious what flavours you'll try first. :)

Thank you but it was surprisingly easy.

I'm not saying it was the most well made or attractive baked Alaska ever but it was pretty darned good for a first attempt. :)

Thank you. Like crepes and cream puffs, it has a rather elevated reputation for what is a pretty simple dessert.
