Oktoberfest Themed: Potato Cheddar soup, Brussel Sprouts and Sausages with Mashed potatoes

Oct 07, 2013 20:42

It's October and a perfect time to serve meals on an Oktoberfest theme ... hearty sausages, cabbage (or those mini cabbages, brussel sprouts), mashed potatoes and a big mug of German beer. No beer but all the other elements were included in this meal which started with a creamy, but still light, potato cheddar soup.

Looks delicious! Both soup and sausages. I love potato soup with some fried bacon on top (is it bacon?). As for German sausages... I have been recently travelling to Germany tasting German sausages and am really disappointed (I did taste good quality stuff from butchers, organic meats etc.). Have you ever tasted Polish sausages? I am now not surprised Germans cross the border to buy cold meats and sausages in Poland! German ham and sausages and black puddings (my biggest deception) are very bland (less herbs, less spices) and often somehow sweetish in comparison, but maybe it's a question of preferences. Berr can be really good though :-) (On the other hand in Canada maybe German-style sausages are produced in a different way). Sissi

Thank you. Yep, I used bacon for the potato cheddar soup and the brussel sprout stir-fry. The sausages I used here were fresh ones so the taste is good but they don't reheat very well for some reason.

Both dishes look very good and I love the look of your cabbage dish. So much colour and flavour! Both of these must be very warming as your weather cools down xx http://hotlyspiced.com

I just read the words "sausage and mash" and now I know what I want for my dinner tonight! Comfort food at it's best :) Claire

It really is. :) Tasty, filling, simple and not very expensive either.

Bravo! What a fantastic meal to celebrate Octoberfest! The soup sounds wonderful for the chilly evenings we're starting to have. I adore Brussels Sprouts particularly with large chunks of bacon as you have done.
