Poutine Trio

The classic poutine is a calorie laden dish featuring piping hot, freshly-made, french fries, sprinkled with a bit of salt with cheese curds scattered through and topped with a hot gravy designed to melt the curds.

Below are 3 variations I've had lately when I couldn't be bothered making anything healthy. :)

Perfect, yummy winter food!

I made this when I lived in Texas for our Canada Day celebrations. People were wary at first, but one bite and they were all true converts!

I don't know what anyone could find to fear ... other than the calories of course. Soup and salads for a week afterwards. :) Or a nice broiled fish and rice.

Rich is beyond words, Maria! We had a photoshoot last Friday and we did a pulled pork poutine, I had to leave the room, too dangerous because they looked and smelled so darn good.

I liked it but, as you said ... OMG it was rich!! :) Soup and pasta in a marinara sauce today

Speaking of pulled pork, I keep intending to make it one of these days. However I am not even close to having emptied out my freezer and, as the nephew also noted, there is way too much frost on the walls to make the freezer function efficiently. Perhaps, if it's really cold on the weekend, I can put everything in the freezer outside for a few hours around 9pm or so to keep cold while I do a quick thaw.

Hot chips and gravy is a favourite meal around here in winter. You see people queuing up to buy hot chips with a ladle of gravy every where in winter. I had no idea this kind of dish had a name! xx http://hotlyspiced.com

That's just called 'gravy fries'. For it to be poutine you need to have fresh cheese curds as well. Though I understand that if the cheese curds are more than 24 hrs old you no longer get the authentic 'squeak' when you bite into them. Unfortunately, I can't get cheese curds that have been made that recently in my 'neck of the woods' aka area. :)

Wow! So this is the famous poutine! I'm grateful for your explanation because I have heard about poutine so many times but had no idea what it was. It looks so rich and delicious, I feel it would be be one of these dangerous dishes I would dream at night of... I must taste it when I go to Canada! (The version with duck looks the best! PS Did you know that "poutine" is the way very small fish is called in the South of France?

I had no idea that a poutine was a fish as well. Funny.

Yep, you can really take a calorie hit when having poutine. As Eva mentioned earlier, there are a number of variations that take it even further over the top ... like pulled pork.

I am sitting here, mouth agape. This is totally embarrassing, I am drooling. I can't think of anything that I want more than duck fat poutine. Thank you for sharing this awesome resource.
