For me it was a way to get leftover seafood items from my freezer into one warming and hearty dish. With some crusty bread and a salad it's a lot of food for not a lot of money.

It looks deliciously warming! It's been quite cold here and I am starting to plan soups again (I never have soups during the summer). I have never had chowder, but I have heard quite often about it. Time to experiment! Sissi (http://www.withaglass.com)

The first chowder (clam), I ever had was at the Red Lobster Restaurant chain in the US and Canada and I hoped to reproduce their version but with more clams in it. I succeeded and then expanded to a seafood version as it's quite easy to pick up a mixed bag of frozen seafood at any good Oriental grocery store. Good luck and happy eating.

I have never tried chowder before but would love to make this with some veggie adjustments ;)
Any suggestions?

Root vegetables are traditionally used because chowders are a wintery type dish made with veggies that would store well and salted fish. Salt pork is traditionally used as well. For me, onions, celery and carrots and corn of course, are the least objectionable veggies there are. And, you have to have potatoes in a chowder. :)

I've seen carrots, red bell pepper, celery, broccoli and cauliflower added in recipes for a vegetable chowder but have never tried it.

I really can't think of any other vegetables you could use and still call it a chowder though.
