Because as you do, the flame inside of it might just POP! right out, and grin at you with pointed teeth.

Calcifer will be zipping around town for most of the night, investigating the new decorations in his own fashion. They're rather to his liking.]

... [Blackbeard hasn't seen many pumpkins back home, since they are native to other seas in his world, so he's picking one of them up to inspect it while talking to no one in particular.] Why's there a face cut inta this thing?

GAH! [Blackbeard drops the jack o' lantern in surprise, stomping on it for good measure.] What the hell are ya supposed ta be?

[he raises a fiery eyebrow at the stomped jack o lantern, rising above it to flicker over Blackbeard's head]

I'm a fire demon. [accompanied with a little flash and crackle, as his teeth grow a bit longer]

[ Rydia is used to the idea of jack o'lanterns by now, though even that gesture startles her. She pauses abruptly and stares.]

It seems to be a trend, this week. I tried to switch back to my old clothes, but that only lasted for a few moments before I was wearing this again. Strange magic, hm?

[Jack has been working hard at boatbuilding all day, and was somewhat enjoying the night lit by lanterns, but he's been on edge since the birds seem to have disappeared. So now he's heading home to get indoors and study over the plans for his ship's cabin.]

[Well, he might notice that there's a light now following him. A lantern will be lit-- and then the light will go out.

Only to reappear in a new jack-o-lantern a little further down the way.]

[He EVENTUALLY notices. And finally spins about abruptly, trying to get a good look at what's happening.]

[don't mind the dark chuckle, that's more of a crackle than a human sound. After the disappointment of finding the barrier impenetrable, he needs something to cheer him up.]

[Giles has been mostly ignoring the jack o'lanterns. They're thematic, they're festive, and they're familiar.

[Jack o'lanterns look the coolest at night, and last year they were harmless. So she is out looking at all the spiffy looking ones until Calcifer decides to ruin it.

Don't mind her though, she's just screaming as loud as possible!]
