Living the Life Dream

This weekend I was down in Portland attending a class for creating and honing pitches for screenplays and novels. A pitch is the short, kick-ass, bright and shiny description that you toss toward an agent or editor in the hope that they'll snatch it out of the air and shout, "Mine!!"

A leap of faith...yeah. This is, if you don't mind me saying, a great opportunity. You get to bring something that's the work of your heart, and, completely vulnerable, present it to the world.

And it's going to be scary as hell, because that sort of vulnerability is never without risk, and without loss, and without the full spectrum of human emotion. It's you standing out in the world, completely without defenses. (Maybe not completely, but it feels that way).

And that's a gift, to get to do that.

I think the reason we freak when asked to talk about our work is because it is OUR creation, our labor of love, and we don't want to be judged. As a teacher, I blather on about stuff in front of folks all day long, but when asked to describe my books, I absolutely freeze and say really ridiculous things. In fact, I hardly ever tell people that I write, just so I won't have to do the big reveal. So I am really proud of you for going to that workshop and tap dancing nekkid for the class. Please share your notes! :)
