Using Public Transport in Melbourne

For those of you who will be using public transport in Melbourne, you can plan your trips through the Metlink web site. Note that many attractions such as the Immigration Museum and the Aquarium are in walking distance of the convention site, and that the Melbourne Zoo is reachable by train!

Possibly a good place to mention the free Circle Tram (? I forget the name of it) that runs around the edge of the city centre. If used with thought, it can save a lot of walking without costing anything, and it stops near most of the city touristy spots.

But having said that, a full-day Metcard is a wonderful thing. You can hop on a tram and ride it for a block or two and get off again. (Being aware of when it's might turn a corner though.) I'd feel silly doing that on buses in another city but it seems right in Melbourne.

And, for anyone travelling to and from the country areas on the Vline services, the ticket can be used as a Metcard for an hour either side of that journey (for a single trip ticket). I've only used that on arriving in Melbourne. Not sure how easy it is to use in other places or how it works getting *to* the train, other than it needs to be pre-purchased.

The free City Circle tram is indeed a good option, too - thanks for mentioning it. We have more details about it and other public transport options in Melbourne on our web site on the Travel & Tourism page.
